Welcome to the iPhoneography User Forum > The iPhone OS 4 almost completly runied the camera for me.
it takes no more then 5 seconds to open up the camera via the home screen, whats the problem ?
if it bothers you so much, open up the camera , then lock ur iphone via the top button, when u unlock it, it will go streight to the camera.
hope this helps

Before you could double tap home and unlock the phone. You could be anywhere in the phone and double tap an the camera would come up. Going though the pages of apps to select the right camera app. Having to open the camera program before I lock the phone in the hopes that the next time I unlock it seems just as cumbersome as selecting the app from my 2nd or 3rd page.
The reason in like the previous feature is because it made the phone feel more like a camera then a phone. Now in feel like I am back to using a mobile phone that sort of also has a camera if you can wade through the interface to activate the pogram.

@Robert
welcome back. i think you will use iPhone as a cam also in the future ;-)
i can feel your pain because i used the same functionality a lot too.
Today i make no double klick but one klick to come back to homescreen and the next click to one of my shooting apps at homescreen (actually ProCamera and Camera+). As they are running already in the background they start superfast with iOS4.
All in all i forgot this pain i also had after upgrading from 3.1.3. I believe my new "workflow" is as fast as the previous double click. i never use the actual function to open the multitask slide with double click. thats why i would be also lucky if doubleclick could open the camapp again. or even better an individual app to choose.
happy shooting Robert!

workflow that is the word I was thinking of. I think about that word all the time when I am working on my digital photos through adobe bridge. workflow matters to me and when they changed the way I do my work it really threw a loop in to my patterns. I have been trying to redefine how the applications are ordered on my phone but I just cant seem to find something that works right.
I would downgrade but i have some iPhone os4 only apps now. I could also jailbreak the phone but I think I have another year or so of warranty I would prefer not to loose. I think I am just down on apple right now and their tight control over the app store and their phone in general.
If I knew anyone to write to at apple where I felt like me writing something would make a difference I would do it.

hmmm that sounds not really good...personally i´m only using the doubleclick button since more then 2 years, so maybe i should upgrade to a 3gs with 3.1.3 os rather then 4 and ios 4?! It´s become a habit to me.

I have ProCamera and Vint B&W (no fast app switching because programmed with SDK for iOS2 back in 2008. No updates ahead but still best black and white if i am 100% sure to want a black and white pics.
Other apps on homescreen are non photo app. Yes i also do other things with my phone :-)
On second screen i have in the following order:
- Clear Cam in quick shot mode as an alternative for antishake mode in other apps.
i like their function more. And new enhanced mode for "highest" quality pics.
Replaced 7.0 MB Camera
- Hipstacatic with only one configuration: John S Lens together with Blackkey Supergrain
- Camera+. For "high speed" shooting and for this and that
- FilmLAB. My number one postprocessing App. I
I use a lot specific film simulation like in my older analog days.
New fovourites function and speed improvements helps a lot
- Photo FX for additional filters like Grain, ND, Polarize etc
- Iris Photo Suite for Photoshop like tasks (replaced Photogene)
- AutoStich. Not for making panos but for making wideangle pics out of 4-6 pics in 2 rows
- TiltShiftGen for getting sharp/unsharp effects
- Pro HDR
- Perfectly Clear
If at the end of the workflow the pic need some improvement left
Like a DJ i use these apps as my main apps. Playing and fooling around ;-)
And yes, i have a lot of more apps. These apps are in 1 Shooting folder and 3 Postprocessing Folders.
And 1 folder with tools to upload with Pixelpipe to Dropbox, Sun Tracker, etc.
All these are on Screen Nr. 2
The folders are one of my main reasons i wont downgrade anymore. With 3.1.3 the 11 available screens for apps werent enough anymore. Thats why i wont downgrade to 3.1.3!
With iOS4 all the apps are more organized and i can work faster than before.
Hope thats helps.

Why don' you just add the Camera App to the tray at the bottom so it's always at the bottom of the screen no matter what page you're on? Then it would only be one tap instead of two clicks so your workflow would actually become more efficient. In my tray I have the Phone App, Messages App, Camera App and Safari App, so no matter what page I happen to be on the Camera App is always in the tray at the bottom and just a thumb-press away. ;)

Sometimes it could be so easy. But you loose instant access of iPod-App. Havent thought of that great tip by myself.
And the best is you can do it with EVERY photo app you want.

I have been trying to find a work around. Nothing is working as well. Right now I took the iPod icon off the bottom dock. I miss having it there due to various usage issue. I am thinking about taking my photo apps out of a group and making another whole page of them like they were before we could group them. Then I would put that on the 2nd page so it might be easier to access.

You can also put your camera apps in a folder and put that folder on your dock. I have a folder called favorites on my dock and it works quite well. Those 12 apps are available from any screen for quick access.

great tip mark

If you jailbreak your phone, you can use Activator to modify the behaviour of the home button. I've set mine to launch ClearCAM when held down for a short period.

Thank you for sharing these things.
I have been so reluctant to "upgrade" my 3gs from 3.1 to 4.0, because I do not want the issues which you have stated. I am very happy with my iphone as a camera - I know exactly what you mean.
The "problem" is that I can't buy many of the newer apps because they are all higher updates than 3.1. But I know that the problems can happen if I do.
Seems like my option is to eventually get iphone 4 and use my 3gs as a camera? But then I'd have to activate and pay for two phones, and that doesn't make sense.
For the meanwhile, I'll not update it.
Also, several hundred photos "disappeared" during an attempted synch with itunes, and I am really reluctant to do that again.
I found an app - Photo Transfer App - which works like a gem - to transfer up to 50 (or more) photos (also videos) from my iphone to computer wirelessly via wifi. Is beautiful, and i don't lose any photos.
Thank you. I love this site, it's really informative and helpful.

Well Stone-D once LimeRa1n came out I jailbroke my iPhone4. I bought a program called Snappy. It comes bundled with activator. It loads the camera and is ready to take a picture in about a second. It also lets you use the volume button shutter release.
Upgrading to the iPone4 and jailbreaking is has fixed and surpassed my previous camera experience.
rfbarr
rfbarr,
Thanks for pointing out snappy. It certainly looks useful, I'll check it out. Is there any kind of antishake? I ask because I have become semi-reliant on clearcam's system, where it takes four shots in a row and chooses the clearest image amongst them to save.
Stone-D
Plus, note that Activator is free - you can launch any app at any time, and with multitasking (especially with Backgrounder) it won't interfere with your current app.

To anyone looking for a batch photo/video sync app for you desktop as a work around iPhoto and iTunes, you can simply use the native Image Capture app in Mac OSX. It reads my iPhone as a cam, opens 100x faster than iPhoto ever did, I can batch transfer to any folder I want. Just disable iPhoto syncing in iTunes iPhone preferences.
I love using it also because it shows a small thumbnail for every photo & video.
Did I mention the app loads and sync transfers like lightning! It makes me absolutely disregard iPhoto & iTunes completely.
Cilo

Hey guys,
I have not been around for awhile. I sort of quit a job and moved and a bunch of other stuff. All of which sort of prevented me from posting or updating on the site. I have also let my flickr account slide some too. That has allot to do with the fact that they no longer allow you to select multiple images from the camera roll at once.
Well I updated to the iPhone to the new OS and since then I have been super annoyed with the phone and just apple in general. I hardly use it as a camera anymore. Sounds weird that I would stop but one simple change in an operating system can really affect some users.
What am I referring too? Double click home to access your favorite apple program. I had it set so that when I double clicked the home button it brought up the camera. I loved it... I went to take a photo with the new OS 4 and the multitask bar appears on the bottom.
I have gone taking many photos a day to maybe 3 or 4 since the iPhone OS 4 update. I am worried about my book. I am complying the 2nd issue of Three Months Through the iPhone and I should be working on the third. The thing is with this update I find it much much much much much harder to actually use the phone as a camera.
I wish I could sit down with Steve jobs... remind him that usually you don't take features out of an operating system. I wish more then anything they would just put the feature back in the phone. Does anyone else feel my pain?
