Welcome to the iPhoneography User Forum > Views on ProCamera please

Hi All,
In my quest to fill my iphone with photo apps, I have come across ProCamera which claims to have superior zoom and low light capability. Has anyone found it better than, say, Snapture wrt zoom function and taking night pics?

I share your quest for the ultimate all in one camera replacement app. Unfortunately, ProCamera isn't it for me.

As far as I can tell, the low-light functionality comes from ProCamera's anti-shake feature, which is very nice for both day and night photography and helps you get sharper images. If there's an automatic low-light algorithm, I couldn't find mention of it on their website. If anyone knows, please let me know.

The zoom function in ProCamera version 2.0 is simply an in-camera crop. No resolution enhancement and you get teeny images when you use ProCamera's zoom function. Snapture has a digital zoom that enhances the resolution of the zoomed image so you get full-size zoomed images. Snapture is probably the best *all-in-one* solution out there at the moment. The app Zoom Lens also has a nice sharpening algorithm which is visibly better than any other digital zoom lens app I've found. Zoom Lens does one thing and it does it well. Neither Zoom Lens nor Snapture have anti-shake, which helps in low-light situations.

I found other issues with ProCamera. I found I was only able to shoot two images in quick succession before the cache filled up and the app paused until both images were saved. Other apps will let you shoot more before filling up.

ProCamera has a compelling set of features. I put it through its paces recently during a weekend LoFi shoot and other than the zoom, I got good images. I'm looking forward to the new Version 2.1 update. I understand that this update will bring a real, full-resolution digital zoom. Hopefully it will address the other issues I've found as well. I'll elt you know as soon as the update's out. For now, I'm still using Camera Genius and Zoom Lens as my main camera apps.

I hope this helps!

Hi Marty,
Thanks for the comprehensive reply. I have Snapture, Zoom Lens and Camera Zoom (and several other 'effects' camera apps) but the quest for the grail continues.
I will wait for ProCamera 2.1 and hopefully a review by our host here before deciding.

If you have not revisited ProCamera since last October you should check it out, they have even added an upgrade of a video feature:

The standard iPhone Camera is really of no use to me, but I found ProCamera which has so many features including a digital zoom-which I prefer, GPS image tracking, sound timer, virtual horizon, Photo Review, album (just shake your phone to review your albums) and features to allow you to continuously shoot photos without having to stop and save each individual image--I'm not sure why this feature was not working for you because it works for me ; ) This is a Super iApp! It's also compatible with 2G/3G & 3GS.

I've tried at least 3 or 4 camera apps to replace the native camera app in my iPhone. While all have been useful, ProCamera is the app I have chosen as the winner. With the latest update, this app does so much more than any of the others. The video function (3GS only) is the biggest selling point. Pictures and video all from one app! I only have two small cons. I wish I could access the video camera with a button instead of having to shake the phone. This seems lame to me. The other is the icon. Not very attractive. Other than that I would recommend to anyone looking for a camera app to check this one out. Until something better comes along, this is my camera app of choice.

This one is really top! All I need for my 3GS is in there - and this is something most people forget- as it is a camera app, the usability is great!
What is a camera with a bad handling? Nothing. ProCamera: GREAT!
Just the shake gesture isn't too intuitive, but I've read somewhere they will add a button for video and the album access..
