The iPhoneography blog is 1 year old today

At 1:21PM on the 15th November 2008 the iPhoneography blog was born (well the idea was conceived a few days before), and so today the blog is 1 year old.

Back on day one, and in my very first post I said:

"In the past I was a very keen amature photographer, but over the years found that I had less and less time to dedicate to this hobby, however this all changed when I bought my first iPhone (the 1st gen) back in November 2007. As I had my iPhone with me all the time, I now had a camera with me all the time, so my hobby became rejuvenated. Although the iPhone only has a 2 megapixel camera (which is fine for snapshots), it has the advantage of being more than just another camera-phone with the growing number of 3rd party photographic apps. It is with this rejuvenated interest and the availability of 3rd part iPhone apps, that I have decided to create iPhoneography, just another iPhone photography blog.

Hopefully over the coming days, weeks, months and years, I will develop (excuse the pun) this blog in to a useful resource for anyone interested in taking photographs using their iPhone, and will post reviews, app news and photos taken by me and my iPhone. I firmly believe that as Apple develops the iPhone, so the camera features will improve, and along with the 3rd party apps, the iPhone will become more than just another snapshot camera-phone.

The main aim of this blog, is to do as much as possible directly on the iPhone, from taking photos, to editing/minipulating them, to posting directly from the iPhone using iBlogger."

So after 1 year how have things been?

Well I was right on a couple of counts, Apple did develop the camera (and continues to do so), increasing the megapixels from 2.0 to 3.0 and added video capturing. The 3rd party photo apps have grown in both quantity and quality (although there are some seriously naff ones), and continue to do so, although due to Apple's approval process there have been some casualties and apps lost along the way.

My comment "As I had my iPhone with me all the time, I now had a camera with me all the time" is a true statement for all of us, and Chase Jarvis who must have had similar thoughts coined the phrase "The Best Camera Is The One That's With You™", basing an app, book and community website around this idea.

We have seen iPhoneography attract much attention from the press, with the likes of Chase Jarvis appearing on several news channels promoting his 'Best Camera' eco system, and Sion Fullana being asked to shoot a magazine cover and along with others featured in a US photo magazine and UK news paper, and I see this interest growing in the coming months and years.

And I was right, the iPhone has become more than just another snapshot camera-phone.

So what for the future?

Well the past 12 months has been exiting here at the iPhoneography blog, which has grown in popularity from just over 1,200 hits in December 2008 to well over 18,500 hits per month and growing; and the next 12 months? well, I hope the next 12 months will be equally exciting, if not more exciting, as I hope to bring the following:

  • The iPhoneography podcast
  • An annual photo competition (more news on that in early 2010)
  • Regular online chat sessions using TinyChat and announced via Twitter (you may have noticed I've taken the current solution off-line)
  • A regular news letter (more news on that in early 2010)
  • My first retro photo app, which should hopefully be available soon (just waiting for Apple to approve it)
  • Hosting the 'Mobile Photo Apps' pavilion at PMA 2010, which I hope many of you can attend as I would love to meet those of you who are helping make this blog and iPhoneography so successful.

In addition to the above, I have some other ideas that may or may not see the light of day, as having lost (due to other commitments) my regular contributors the blog is now back to being a one man band.

Well that's the future plans/ideas for the blog out of the way, but what about the future of the iPhone? Well I predict that 2010 will see the iPhone's camera increased to 5.0 megapixels, have a built-in digital zoom along with a full screen shutter button, and an LED light/flash.

Well that's my plans and predictions out of the way, but there is just one last thing

I just want to thank all of you who follow this blog, because without your support, the blog would not be what it is today, so a BIG thank you to you all.

Congrats Glyn! I've actually been following your site for nearly a year now :P.

I love this site and I don't know where I'd been without it.. (obviously I wouldn't have as big of a passion for photography as I do now)

Dear Glyn! Happy anniversary and thank you soooo much for the very hard work you put into this wonderful blog.

Like I told you repeatedly, I owe you big time for it was you who put me in the path for everything my iPhoneography has been bringing later, back when you interviewed me.

I am definitely looking forward to seeing what comes next for both of us and the iPhoneography movement in general. 5MP cam? That would be a dream! And can't wait to see your app.

To many years more!

Glyn,

Congratulations! iPhoneography.com is one of my first reads in the morning. I appreciate the community that has gathered here. The iPhonegraphy that you showcase here is often an inspiration to me. Thank you very much for everything you've done and I wish you continued success in the coming years.

We're planning a trip to England for early next year. Maybe we can arrange it around PMA 2010. It'd be nice to see an exhibit of others' work and it'd be cool to hang out and talk shop.
