iPhone App Review: LOFI

Just over a week ago LOFI from Chris Comair hit the AppStore, and is a free app from this talented developer that brought us Polarize and EffectsLab.  I was fortunate enough to be one of the limited beta testers of LOFI, and couldn't wait for its release to the AppStore, so the rest of you to get you hands on it.  You have have already guessed by my tone that I really like this app, but for Chris and the rest of you here is my review.

LOFI, the developers description: LOFI (LOw-FIdelity) is a most simply put a celebration of imperfection. Cross processing, also known as x-pro, is the art of developing film in the most untraditional ways, to give the most untraditionally beautiful appeals. LOFI takes the art of digital cross processing to a whole new level, giving you 12 totally different and unique processing styles. You can either process a single photo at a time, or process many photos together in templates, allowing for great color contrast and juxtaposition.

Worried about your resolution? No problem, LOFI will output at 3GS resolution. Just check out the application settings!

Want to share your photos? No worries, LOFI uploads to all your favorite social sites including Flickr, Twitter, Facebook, and more!

The App

Launch the app and you are presented with the app splash screen from which you have two paths to take, one creates a single image whilst the other lets you create a multi image.

Multi image

Tap on the image of the files on the splash/home screen and you have the option of creating a multi image photo made up of between 2 and 9 photos from 1 of 5 templates, which are easily selected by tapping the left or right arrows from the apps screen. When you have chosen your preferred template, simply tap the white box and load a photo from you photo album, then select from 1 of 12 LOFI colour effects, and then the image is loaded to the selected white box. Repeat this process for each of the white boxes until all from the selected template have been filled, and then simply tap the menu option to either save or share, which is done via the Mobypicture service.

Single image

If you do not want to create multi image results, but simply apply any 1 of the 12 LOFI effects to a single photo, then from the splash/home screen just tap on the image of the camera and you presented with the choice of taking a photo or load one from the photo album. Once you have selected or taken your photo the effects preview screen will be loaded, and from here you have the choice of applying any 1 of the following 12 effects:

  • Original
  • Loca
  • Color Pro
  • Red Extra
  • EF-2
  • Super 100
  • Y-Scale
  • Delux-1
  • Mono
  • Super 100+
  • Original+
  • Loca+

Once you have selected your choice of effect and the imaged has loaded full screen, simply tap on the menu and again either save or share, and that's all there is to this LOFI photo app.

This is a great app providing a unique range of colour effects all bundled up in a simple to use, well polished app, and what's amazing? is it's all for FREE, so if you don't already have LOFI, then go and get it now, you wont regret it.
