The iPhoneography Showcase of Jason Caine

Only days after purchasing my 3Gs, I discovered how much fun the iPhone camera and the wide variety of apps for it really are.  While my DSLR travels with in my car on a daily basis, being so busy throughout the day often prohibits me from setting everything aside and digging in to actually use it.  The iPhone has afforded me the opportunity to do just that ... to capture and share some of the simple moments that we all encounter on a day-to-day basis as they unfold in front of me.

Having an iPhone in my pocket and ready to go at any time has actually helped me refine my creativity, enabling me to discover and capture moments within seemingly mundane tasks and travels of the day.  While it lacks many of the features that most simple point and shoot cameras offer, it does have one particularly valuable attribute that sets it apart: It's always there, in my pocket and ready to snap a picture with the simple flick of a finger!  It allows me to not only be prepared with a camera, but also the ability to quickly and easily process images and share them across the internet.  For me … it’s the toy camera of the digital age!

My iPhone is loaded with a variety of photography apps that I experiment with (53 of them at last count … yes, I have a problem), but there are several that I would consider my “workhorse” applications that I use consistently.  Photogene is the first app that almost all of my images go through, in most cases just for some basic levels or exposure adjustments.  I use TiltShift Generator on many images to help simulate some sort of depth of field … something the iPhone’s native camera app lacks with its fixed focal length lens.  I’m also fond of the wide variety of effects in Tiffen’s Photo fx, it’s ease of use and the ability to dial in the specific intensity of each effect to suit your exact needs.  Last but not least is Chase Jarvis’s Best Camera … hands down, my most used app.  Everything goes here, if for nothing else, to be shared. In my opinion, the sharing features of this app have all the other’s beat, allowing you to share your creative images not only through the app’s own URL shortener - bestc.am - but also thru Twitter and Facebook all simultaneously on one screen.  I get a kick out of stacking the various filters in the Best Camera app and then going in and experimenting with the look and feel of an image simply by moving the filter order around; I have discovered some real winning combinations this way!

Check out those apps ... or the dozens of others that Glyn has reviewed here on iPhoneography.  I'm sure that there are a couple you'll discover that you can use to unlock and share your own hidden creativity with the world.  I look forward to seeing what you create!
