Vodafone "Magic"

Glyn Evans This is slightly off topic, but today Vodafone announced the release of its new phone made by HTC, the "Magic".
The "Magic" will be a Vodafone exclusive in the United Kingdom, Spain, Germany, France, a non-exclusive basis in Italy, and feature a 3.2-inch QVGA touch screen with trackball navigator, support for Google applications like Gmail, Google Maps and Google Search, and a 3.2-megapixel camera, plus apps from the Android Market.
Running the Google Android operating system, and having a similar style to Apple's iPhone, I think Vodafone are on to a real winner with this one, so could this be the first real competition for Apple's iPhone? I think the answer to this question is YES.
Whilst I have no intention of switching to to the "Magic", I will be envious of its 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus, so come on Apple, if HTC can add autofocus, why can't you?

Do you think the iPhone applications will work on this? I love all the camera applications but am not able to get an iPhone because I am under contract with a different mobile carrier.

No the iPhone apps are not compatible, but I know there are a few photo apps available for Googles Android operating system, and I wouldn't mind betting that some of the iPhone apps will be ported across at some point in the future.
I have a friend who has just upgrade to the T-Mobile G1, and he is very happy with it, so for anyone not able to go for an iPhone due to contractual or other reasons, the Magic looks like a good alternative.
I trust that we will get a better camera in the next version of the phone. At least I hope so. I am holding off buying the 3g with that in mind.
Greg, I'm hoping for a 5 megapixel camera, and it would be nice if it was autofocus like the new HTC Magic.
