Photogene v PhotoForge, an editors comparison

Over at iPhone Photo Video the editor has written a short personal comparison between Photogene and PhotoForge.

Having used both of these apps myself, it was interesting to read that another editor is of the same opinion as me. "PhotoForge outshines PhotoGene in the depth and breadth of editing tasks, only PhotoGene handled all the tasks that I need to perform during everyday photo editing".

I do like Photogene, but I have to admit I use Photo fx a lot more, which has some great effects. Photogene is easy to use and has some good features though. I haven't tried PhotoForge, but as the review says, if I want to do anything really fancy then I would import to the Mac. I am happy with the 2 apps I have.

As the editor of the review on http://iphonephotovideo.com, I feel with you. I hardly ever upload straight from the iPhone, thus I don't really edit that much. Being an advanced amateur with more than a decade of Photoshop experience, I prefer to do major edits (and many iPhone 3G pictures require major edits) on my Mac. I like the effect of PhotoFX (which we also reviewed on our site) and similar applications, but typically use effects on Photoshop as needed. But if it works for you, keep on using it. As the saying goes: The best camera is the one you have with you - the same is true for picture editing...

I'm torn between the two apps. I usually default to Photogene a lot but PhotoForge is good when you want to do a lot more. Both are very useful in my book.

I have both and find both necessary. I'm lucky in that I have both the iPhone 3g and 3gs so I pretty much keep the 3gs for photography apps which leaves me lots of room, but if I could only have one of the apps it would probably be PhotoForge.
