iPhone App Review: AutoStitch

AutoStitch is an app that allows you to create panoramic photos quickly and easily on your iPhone.

The apps interface

Launch the app and you are taken straight to the apps interface (no splash screens here), which is clean and simple.

Across the top part of the screen you will see your photo albums listed, and it is from here you select and load the photos that will make up your panoramic image.

The lower part of the screen is where your selected photos will load, and ultimately stitched together to create the final image.

Lastly in the very top right hand corner of the apps interface you will see an i and here you will find instructions and hints on using the app.

Create your panoramic

The first thing you need to do before you can begin creating your panoramic is take a series of photos that will make up the panoramic photo, and this is all done using the iPhone's camera. You can take as many or a few photos as you like in either portrait or landscape view, and the only recommendation from the developer is to try and allow for a 30% overlap between each photo, but don't worry to much about being accurate with this (I didn't).

Having taken the photos that will form your panoramic, simply launch the app and select the photos from your photo album, tapping each photo to select it. There is no need to wait to load each photo one at a time, just keep tapping away until all the photos that will make up your panoramic have been selected. You will then notice that in the lower part of the screen each photo will load one at a time until all are loaded and ready to be stitched together. When all the photos have loaded you will notice the "Clear" and "Stitch" buttons become active. If you have loaded the wrong photos hitting "Clear" will remove all the photos from the "Photos to Stitch" section allowing you to start again with the correct photos, or hitting "Stitch" will begin the panoramic creation process.

The panoramic creation process is very simple, as all the work is done by the app itself, with no need for your to manually line up your photos. After hitting the "Stitch" button you will see a progress bar appear, showing each step of the creation process.

First off you will see "Extracting Features" followed by "Aligning Images", then "Rendering Panorama" and finally "Done". When the whole process is complete hitting save in the top right hand corner of the screen will prompt you to "Save to Photo Album" and that's it your done, and you now have your panoramic.

My final thoughts

AutoStitch is by no means perfect, as the photo below shows, it did fail to produce an acceptable panoramic of this seascape, but is was only this type of panoramic that the app struggled with.

What I really like about AutoStitch is the fact that you can take a series of photos and then create the panoramic at a later stage, and there is no need to accurately frame each shot ensuring it is lined up with the previous one, which can prove difficult in bright sunlight, as the apps advanced algorithm does all the alignment for you.

For me AutoStitch is a great app that makes creating panoramic images a quick and easy process, and as a result I have found myself creating more panoramic's than I had with a previous app.

The only feature missing from AutoStitch is a method of cropping out the black areas around the edge of the panoramic created by the stitching process, but the use of a third party app like Cropulator easily fixes this.

The current version of AutoStich has a crop feature. I'm loving this app big time.

I'm sorry if I can't find the function inside this app, but isn't it able to take pics out of the apps??

I can only load presaved images of my album but not taking pics out of the app

@MM. AutoStitch only allows you to create panoramic's from existing photos and does not support taking photo from with in the app.
