Shoot to Publish: iPhone 3GS Video in 6 Easy Steps

Glyn Evans Hello fellow iPhoneographers! I have been messing around with the video on the 3GS for a few weeks now just like everyone else. There are some tutorials on the net that detail how to get the best out of your iPhone video, but I can show you a more efficient way to get your files off of your iPhone for editing, while retaining the highest quality.
So you have shot a masterpiece that rivals anything Michael Bay could ever conceive, lens flair and all, but what do you do next?
Step 1
First, plug in your iPhone to your Mac and search for Image Capture in Spotlight.
Step 2
Next you will want to click on the “Download Some…” button as you may not want to download 1533 images/videos
Step 3
Next you will pick and chose the clips that you want to download
Step 4
Next you will want to fire up iMovie, and go to File-> Import-> Movies. Locate the movie files on your desktop and import.
Step 5
Next you will have the option of creating a new event and moving your files to the media library. You also have the option of importing the files in their native resolution, or you can import them (upscale) to 1920x1080.
Now it may take a few moments for iMovie to import the files but when that is finished you are good to go! You can now edit your movie, trim the clips, add titles, and make transitions.
Step 6
When you are finished editing your movie, iMovie has a simple “Publish to YouTube” option, as well as an option to publish to iTunes (which you will later sync to your iPhone), but if you are publishing for the web its best to export your masterpiece using Quicktime. Simply right-click on your finished movie and bring up the Video Compression Settings
You will want to keep an eye on the compressor quality, depending on the length of your movie because the end file can become quite large. Again, it may take some time to encode your movie depending on the quality settings, so in the mean time fire up the barbeque and throw on that T-bone you picked up on your way home! By the time you’re finished you can enjoy your movie.
Again, I found this the easiest way to transfer the video files from the iPhone and into iMovie. If there are any questions, feel free to sound off in the comments below, and keep us posted on your progress!

I simply have iPhoto automatically load when photos or videos are detected on my iPhone when it connects. I import into iPhoto, then when iMovie loads it automatically adds the videos to it without you having to find them manually. Then share however you like. To me this is the most simplest way as the apps do all the work for you. However, it does assume you use iPhoto.
Yes it is possible to transfer to iPhoto if you use that application but at the same time I find that the transfer and pull up of the actual program can become a drag. I do use iPhoto to back up my iPhone pics and for some reason it takes forever to connect to my iPhone (which may be due to the amount of pics on the iPhone)
When I run Image Capture, the app comes up in a fraction of a second and instantly recognizes the device.
iPhoto may become an issue if you decide to move your files when editing in iMovie (need to double check this)
In general, the video editing game is similar to photo editing but in many ways different. For me the best process is to dump the .mov files from image capture to an external FireWire drive and edit from there, saving space on the OS volume.
Excellent tutorial !
