iPhone App Review: Mosaica by Aaron Lindberg

Mosaica is a 3D Multi-touch panorama app. The program does a nice job of stitching a group of photos together on the iPhone automatically and renders them into a 3D space.

App interface:

Once the app is launched, the program jumps right into the start of the program with a very simple interface. The user only has a handful of options to choose from which makes it simple but it is a bit drab. The black and white interface could have been supped up a little bit but on the flip side it is simple and gets the job done. From the start menu you can view recently added 3D renderings from other users as well as more popular Mosaics.

Create your Mosaic:

After opening the app and choosing My Mosaics, you will need to choose new and start building your 3D Mosaica. During Edit mode you have the option of taking photos with the camera or import images from your iPhone library. I shot a handful of images of my backyard and loaded them into the app, I was impressed that it found the edges of some of the items in the photos and aligned the photos properly.

Online ability:

A great feature of Mosaica is the online function of the program. Once you get your Mosaic built, it’s easy to get it online, simply push upload and you will be taken to a screen where you can give it a title along with your user name and email address. A nice little touch is the ability to post to Twitter from inside the app. Once the uploading is finished you have the option to view your work in a web browser (flash enabled web browser) or send the link in an email.

Key features worth mentioning:

  • Automatic Stitching – This is good and bad at the same time. When it works it works wonderfully but sometimes certain things can throw off the stitching process and it will not recognize all of the parts of an image. When the images do line up, it looks great.
  • Online – This is really neat about this app is that once you are done with your Mosaic, you can upload and share them online in a Flash gallery. Good job Dapper Vision Inc. on adding this feature. – Check out my first post here.
  • Twitter – Once you are done uploading, you can send them out on Twitter and let your followers know you just posted a new Mosaica.

Ya or Nay?

Overall this app is defiantly worth the download for the price. I could see myself using this on vacation or somewhere interesting that I wanted to share with people. One thing I was really surprised with was the process power of the app and how it renders the final image. I tested it by sending 10 photos and it completed the job in a couple seconds, I thought it would choke it out and crash but it did a nice job of rendering the images. This program was tested on a 3GS.

Editors thoughts: I have tried this app, but for me the clear winner in the panoramic photo app category is still AutoStitch.
