New iPhone Photo App: Snapture

Description from the AppStore: No one trick ponies here. Snapture is the next generation camera app that delivers a comprehensive feature set that will truly revolutionize the way you take photos on the iPhone.

Snapture's Picture-in-Picture (QuickView) feature is a patent-pending technology built from the ground up with the user in mind. Snap a picture and instantly see the result in the corner of your screen. Need a closer look? Simply press and hold the picture. Want to email a good picture or delete a bad one? Simply slide the thumbnail across the screen. You'll never have to access the camera roll again!

Need Zoom? Simply use your fingers to Pinch and Pan the viewfinder like you would with a normal photo, Snapture's patent-pending multi-touch zoom technology will take care of the rest. Capture exactly what you want. 5X zoom for the most discerning of photographers.

Snapture's full-function feature set also includes:

  • High Speed Multishot: 3 rapid fire snaps to capture every moment of action.
  • Easy Snap: Tap anywhere on screen to take a photo. You know you're hot - take self-photos!
  • TouchZone: Stabilize or cancel your shot using TouchZone.
  • Multiple Image Sizes: Most camera apps reduces image quality, Snapture allows for capture at full resolution.
  • Level Aid
  • Auto/Manual Save
  • Tooltips, and much more!

Editors comments: Way back in December last year when the blog was just 1 month old and I was looking for that ultimate image capturing app to replace my iPhone's built-in camera app I stumbled across "Snapture", however to use it you needed to "jailbreak" your iPhone.  This prompted me to write this post "To jailbreak or not to jailbreak?", well the good news is that yesterday, and following Apple's decision to allow developers better access to the camera API's, Snapture Labs released "Snapture" for the rest off us non jailbroken iPhone owners.

Without hesitation I bought this app, and on first impressions I have not been disappointed, after all this isn't really a new app, but one that has been around for awhile and has been tweaked and enhanced, and hopefully had all its bugs removed.

Whilst there are now countless apps in the AppStore that offer similar features, this is one of the original multifunction camera apps and even before carrying out a full review I would recommend it, it may even be the app to replace my iPhone's built-in camera app!!

I just downloaded this app, and my initial impressions are not great. Some things I noted:

1. No geo-tagging of photos
2. The extra step of having to wait for photos to save to the camera roll - and slow with full resolution.
3. Does have auto focus but of course looses the ability to set the exposure as a result.
4. It seems to make my 3GS camera (the hardware) make an audible clicking sound when the app is openend - has anyone else had this!? Quite worrying...
5. No video options of course.

On the upside the preview system is cool, the zoom functionlity is nice (although there is little that can really be done with digital zoom...), and multishot also is a nice addition. The fullscreen button is probably the best function - but this is not unique to the app.

Anyway, my two cents. The camera noise worried me so much I have actually deleted it from my phone for now...Owch

Ammendment to point 3. - the lack of the point-to-focus ability means no manual exposure adjustments, although focus works fine.

@champagne01. Thanks for your feedback on this app, and I hope to have a review early next week.
