App Update: SneakyPix
Thursday, October 28, 2010 at 6:36PM |
Glyn Evans Have you ever wanted to take a photo secretly? Well with the latest update to SneakyPix, you can now pretend to be making a phone call, whilst your iPhone snaps away.
This is a big update, with the much requested "Fake in-call screen", as well as other tweaks and bug fixes.

So what's new?
- Fake "in-call" screen when taking pictures*
- Phone vibrates with each photo snap
- Set a limited number of photos to take
- Fixed crashing problems
- Fixed the bug where SneakyPix only saved a few of the photos
- Decreased delay between photo snaps
- Full resolution photos on iPhone 4, 600x800 pixels on other devices
- No more "abrupt exits." Double-tap to smoothly stop taking photos and return to the main screen

Strange that this even got through Apple's review to be honest. Other than perverts/paedos/dodgy people who need to take 'sneaky' pictures?
@MBD, think street photography
Can anyone with an iphone4 confirm if the dev fixed the flash going off when taking pictures with this? It looks perfect for taking pictures of interesting people on the commuter bus, but the reviews of the previous version say the flash goes off on the iphone4 which kind of defeats the purpose of the app, hoping he fixed it.
@kludger, I can confirm the flash is disabled.
Great thanks for confirming, buying it now then.
It seems I must downloaded this when it was free some time ago...
'coz when I tried to buy I got the message that I already purchased this so it would be free update. ^ ^
@Glyn, I think maybe I'm not 'the norm' as I don't care if people notice me taking pictures or not and would rather be up front and obvious. Then again I normally go for objects, architecture, landscapes etc rather than people so that could be why. Each to their own :)
I read there is an app called camera camouflage, that takes video this way too!
It was not available in the US and Dutch shop..
In addition to my previous comment:
I see in iTunes that there are more of these apps (with video too!)
The app 'Disguised Cam' looks good (and takes video)
"Face Spy" as well.
@kludger, thanks for checking out my app, SneakyPix. Face Spy is great for taking photos while looking at your screen, but you'll still look like you're taking a photo if you have it pointed at someone. That's where SneakyPix is advantageous: you can act like you're on the phone without having to tap a button to take the photos. Also it's a mere $0.99, compared to some others at $1.99 (Cam-u-flage) and $2.99 (YKW Stealth Camera).
If you all have any questions or suggestions for SneakyPix, feel free to get in touch! I'd love any sort of feedback and ways to improve.

Thanks James, I bought and really like your app (will leave a review soon as I get a chance), a couple of suggestions for the next version might be:
1. configurable frequency for how often the pictures are taken
2. option to hide the instructions page when you first open the app i.e. have it go directly to the fake phone screen directly or have a landing page that is a little less obvious.
3. video
Overall great app, thanks for the support follow-up here, I look forward to future versions.
"# Full resolution photos on iPhone 4, 600x800 pixels on other devices"
Meh! So in one word: Useless for non-iPhone4 Users!
MBD:
"Strange that this even got through Apple's review to be honest. Other than perverts/paedos/dodgy people who need to take 'sneaky' pictures?"
LOL, typical reaction of somebody who can't think even 2 inches ahead!
Just yesterday I was in the supermarket and I wanted to take a picture of some food that I don't know (to send to my wife to ask if she would like that one). But I don't like it if the phone goes all "KATSHAAAAK" in the middle of the supermarket and everyone is starring at me!
Sometimes it just needs a little more thought before you make stupid comments like yours!
@kludger, thanks for purchasing the app! I will definitely look into those features and hopefully be able to include some on the next update.
@Loungy, the reason I decided to do 600x800px on non-iPhone 4 devices is because of processing time. It took nearly 8 seconds to save a full-size photo on older devices, which is a terrible capture rate. By saving it at a smaller size, the phone is able to take a snapshot about every 4 seconds. So it was more of a compromise for performance. But I'm completely open to adding that as a setting if it looks like people would prefer the larger size over performance -- what is your take on this?
@MBD, while this app certainly can be used for inappropriate purposes, that's not the intention by any means. If you read through the reviews, there are plenty of people who have found wonderful uses (e.g. a mother taking a photo of her child who was camera-shy). I hope you give SneakyPix a second chance before jumping to conclusions. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to get in touch with me.
@loungy Wrong sode of the bed today? Had you bothered to read further down you'd have seen from my second post that I was simply stating that I'd have no use for it. If I'm taking a photo then I don't care who sees me taking it. Even today in the local DIY store I was happily taking pictures of items, prices etc for me to price up a project at home.
Good thing you didn't go overboard though isn't it? ;)
@MBD
Yeah so I didn't saw your second comment.
"Good thing you didn't go overboard though isn't it? ;)"
Same could be said about your first comment though.
@loungy
I've re-read my first post and while it's a little terse I don't think it's overboard. If that's how it's come across then I apologise, it was purely a post asking what use the 'sneaky' app has other than for those with unsavoury goals in mind.
I will continue striving to think more than two inches ahead to avoid stupid comments though. ;)
