Glif, the iPhone 4 tripod mount and stand

Glif is a simple iPhone 4 accessory with two primary functions.

  1. Mounting your iPhone to a standard tripod.
  2. Acting as a kickstand to prop your phone up at an angle.

This neat looking accessory, which will be made from Santoprene hard rubber, and hold the phone securely, is the brainchild of Thomas Gerhardt, a software and hardware developer, and Dan Provost a interaction designer/blogger.

The idea for the Glif was first formed when both Thomas and Dan realized the iPhone 4 was literally the best camera they'd ever owned. With the addition of HD video recording and High Dynamic Range photography, it was clear Apple was positioning the iPhone as a very high quality portable camera. But because of its small form factor (and Apple's minimalist design approach) it will never contain a threaded nut for attaching a tripod - standard on almost all photo and video cameras. Solutions for mounting an iPhone to a tripod exist (DIY or otherwise) but they are typically bulky and cumbersome. Thomas and Dan's goal was to create something small, simple, and elegant, and looking at the video, I think they have achieved this.

The Glif is not yet in production, but is a Kickstarter project.  For more information about the Glif, and and how you can pre-order one, head over to theglif.com

I really do not understand the huge buzz behind this thing. I bought an iPhone 4 tripod mount a few weeks ago that is neither bulky nor cumbersome.

Khürt: 1) This also acts as a kick stand. 2) It is the dream of America - an individual or small company designs something new and creative. You are paying into the success of someone else.

Khurt I too have the iPhone tripod mount and have nothing but praise for it and the very helpful manufacturer. Also it works with both the 3Gs and the 4 which the Glif doesn't. I also read on another site that the Glif is likely to be about $20 - twice the cost of the iPhone tripod holder.

Interested to see if you've downloaded and tried the new 'pinhole' app. Although i've had one crash so far - I do like the look of the Expired Colour Film, and the double exposure thing is pretty nifty :)

Imho, not too bad for 59p!

Personally I'm guessing they won't stay at $20. My read is you are contributing to a start up company. One person said they could build these for $4.

I too have the tripod mount for iphone 4, but this seems like it would be easier in landscape mode then the other one. Beside the face im looking to buy a kickstand, too bad it isnt ready to buy bc i need a kick stand now!

Re: Pinhole Camera.
Jem does the Pinhole camera app produce full res images? It looks like an interesting app.

Glyn: Unfortunately not... the ones I got out of it were 640 x 640. There doesn't seem to be any settings to change it either - but something for a future update I hope! The double exposure thing is pretty damn good either way, I put some examples on facebook if you wanted to go take a look..

The glif is a nice product, but it does require you to remove your phone from its case to use it. I work for PC Treasures, and we offer a tripod mount that works with any phone and lets you leave that phone in its case when using it. It's also ten bucks cheaper. It's called the GrippIt.
