New iPhone Photo App: Retro Camera Plus

App Store Description: With Retro Camera you'll take delicious old-school pics your friends will drool over. 5 cameras, 5 sets of vintage vignetting, film scratch & cross processing effects for that off-the-hip analog look. Inspired by the old Lomo, Holga, Polaroid, Diana & toy cameras whose iconic styles we treasure. Instant Nostalgia now free.

Retro Camera comes with 5 different cameras:

  • The Bärbl - An East German classic, naturally faded with a scratched film and medium vignetting, the perfect all-round choice.
  • The Little Orange Box - The Soviet Staple with aggressive cross processing and scratched square film. It's crappy plastic lens leaks in light and exhibits strong vignetting. Black and white option for even more emotion.
  • Xolaroid 2000 - Its inspiration is obvious! We love the candid snapshots this camera produces - you simply can't fail, every shot is a keeper. Blue / Green cross processing effects and timeless contrast. Black and white option for that classic touch.
  • The Pinhole Camera - A DIY gem and more unpredictable than Schrödinger's cat. Full bleed developing and vignetting through the roof, be sure to give this cardboard chimera a go.
  • The FudgeCan - The perfect rig for outdoors; developed on square film that wasn't quite stored... or developed right. But therein lies the charm that'll make your pics with this beauty, memorable and instantly nostalgic.

Editors comments: This free ad supported app is a Hipstamatic wannabe that produces some surprisingly good results, and just like Hipstamatic the photos are square format, but sadly only 1200 x 1200 pixels.

The app does hang a lot whilst switching between the different cameras, but the app is free, so I should complain too much.

The app is not going to win any awards, but if your looking for a free low-res Hipsta like app, then check it out, after all, what's the worst you can do? delete it!

Lol no way I thought the title sounded familiar. I have this app for my Droid X. It's a great app.

Finally! One of my friends has this on his Droid and i've been pretty impressed with some of the results. Been waiting for the iPhone version.

I'm not to fond of camera replacement apps but since it's free, I'll give it a try.

I'm glad this is on the iPhone. I noticed it last night and downloaded it right away. Months ago I put this on my husband's Droid 2 but he didn't like it, and neither did I so I deleted it. But on the iPhone it's about a thousand times better, and I'm a little impressed so far, BUT that's because I was comparing it to the android version and not Hipstamatic or anything like that for the iPhone. I'd be willing to pay for an ad-free version.

@dspace that good! Do you have a link to 4.1 JB? Because so far I only found info that there's no JB for 4.1 yet.

"Hipstamatic wannabe " - right on, but it's free, so I'll grab it - tks!

@loungy You can jailbreak 4.1 w/ Limera1n or Greenpois0n...

Regardless of the 1200x1200 resolution, it's good to see a Droid developer make the move to iPhone rather than the other way around. I believe that Retro Camera by Urbian is arguably the crown jewel of Droidography apps. While it's a decent enough app, I don't envy Droidographers.

Now I can get a taste of Droidography without dropping $200 for a new phone that I'd rarely use otherwise.

@jFotography Thanks for the hint! The problem is my iPhone is JB'd on IOS 4.0.1 and I'm not sure if there's a way to update to 4.1 and JB it without restoring the whole phone (Backup seems not to work in ITunes, it only syncs my apps but nothing else).

So if anyone knows how to update and JB from a jailbroken ios 4.0.1 to 4.1 I'd love to know how.
