Notable App Updates

This week has seen a number of app updates, and here are my most notable ones.

DXP [App Store Link] priced at £1.19/$1.99/€1.59 from developer Tandem Systems has just been updated to version 2.1.1, bringing full-res support and bug fixes to this very good multi exposure app.

Also the very good, if a little complex, universal app Filterstorm [App Store Link] was updated to version 2.6.2, bringing improvements in RAW import handling, improved error messaging when location services access is not present, and a bug fix that caused vignetting preview to become misaligned if the devices is rotated while the preview is showing. Filterstorm is currently available priced at £2.39/$3.99/€3.19

Phoster [App Store Link], the popular poster creation app priced at £1.19/$1.99/€1.59, got some festive cheer this week, with the release of version 1.0.5, and the addition of Happy Holiday templates, new blending filters, and bug fixes.

Universal app FlickStackr [App Store Link] has also been updated, fixing a number of bugs and providing a number of improvements.

So what's new?

  • Copyrighted images (most of photos in Flickr) can now be downloaded again without popups. A small, auto-dismiss (2 second) transparent legend is shown to inform you of the license type.
  • Images which the owner does not allow to download, are blocked (Save to Photo Library tool) due to Flickr API licensing restrictions.
  • Automatic cache size control. By default it is 500 MB. It can be controlled via the Settings app.
  • Improved Recent Photos From Your Contacts, thanks to your feedback: On the Settings app you can select how many photos to show maximum per contact; Activity is shown for the last two weeks; All contacts that have uploaded recently are listed; The total number of photos shown depends on your contacts' actual activity + maximum photos per contact you set. You can expect from 50 to approximately 500 photos shown.
  • Change Contact Relationship screen was not working.
  • Incorrect refresh when rotating device in thumbnails view.

Diptic [App Store Link], the universal app that lets you create juxtapose results, has just been updated to version 2.0.

Priced at just £1.19/$1.99/€1.59, this update brings higher resolution support up to 2048 x 2048 pixels. This update has also brought with it, new Expandable Layouts. This in-app purchase* allows you to adjust the dimensions of your Diptics. Using the slider, you can easily create compositions in a variety of formats — standard square shapes, rectangular formats in standard 4x16 or 9x16 ratios, or any custom size you prefer.

*The new Expandable Layouts option costs £0.59/$0.99/€0.79.

This has been a busy week for updates, but it's not just photo apps that have been updated, but number of video apps as well, and the two most notable ones are TiltShift Video and VideoFix from developer Fidel Lainez.

TiltShift Video [App Store Link] priced at £1.19/$1.99/€1.59 was updated to version 1.3 with...

  • Improved video quality, especially for HD (720p) videos.
  • Important internal optimizations and fixes. App consumes now around 65% less memory, making it much more stable.
  • Now the application looks for videos not only in your Camera Roll, but in your Photo Library too!. This means that you can apply the Tilt-Shift effect to those videos synchronized via iTunes to your Photo Library. Please, keep in mind that the video resolutions the App can process are still limited to one of these: 720p, 560p or 480p. Also, please, keep in mind that if you have synchronized a video to your Photo Library, but it is still present in your Camera Roll, it will be displayed twice on the list.
  • Replaced the "Made With" option with a text field. Now you can enter the text you want as the end title!

...whilst VideoFix [App Store Link] also priced at £1.19/$1.99/€1.59 was updated to version 1.1, with the following changes.

  • The App is now Universal!!! This means that you can run it in your iPhone or iPod Touch for quick processing on the go or you can enjoy processing the videos in the nice big screen from your iPad... all for the same price! The iPad interface presents a unique editing screen, with a big preview area and adjustment controls which are both easy and fast to use.
  • Important optimizations. VideoFix uses less memory than ever, making it much more stable!
  • Now the application looks for videos not only in your Camera Roll, but in your Photo Library too!. This means that you can "fix" all those videos synchronized via iTunes to your Photo Library. Please, keep in mind that the video resolutions the App can process are still limited to one of these: 720p, 560p or 480p. Also, please, keep in mind that if you have synchronized a video to your Photo Library, but it is still present in your Camera Roll, it will be displayed twice on the list. Synchronizing videos into the Photo Library is the way to make them available for editing in the iPad version.

Well that's this weeks roundup of most notable app updates, but as always stay tuned for more updates.

Touch Retouch got an update too a day or two ago. Nice improvements, but it takes a long time to 'process' your erasing now - maybe twice as long as before. And no visual processing indicators. Still, nice app.
