Monday, December 20, 2010 at 4:40PM |
Glyn Evans For those of you who have missed Camera+, there is some good news. According to the developers blog [see quote below], an updated version of Camera+ is currently in review with Apple, so if all goes well we could see Camera+ back in the App Store real soon.
Quote from developer tap tap tap's blog: "for those of you who’ve been clamoring to hear some news on the ultimate photo app, Camera+, we’ve got some great stuff for you… our newest version is now finished and in review in the App Store, so it should be available anytime now.
What’s new in it? Well, we’ll save that as a surprise for you, but it’s our biggest update yet. I promise that you won’t be the least bit disappointed with it, so get ready for it…"
Stay tuned for more news on this apps comeback.

i wont update unless i know that volume snap will be there! and it wont. right?
Good news for shooters!
The ProCamera / Camera+ rivalry heats up again....
=M=
I'm glad to see it coming back, but the absolute silence of the Tap Tap Tap blog, for months now, has left me very, very cold, towards this company.
Its still no excuse for the months of silence from this company, something that they have still not addressed directly on their blog.
I'm sorry but its just not that grea,t so fanfare & red carpet not required for this update, unless it can make a good cup of tea or something via a triple home tap...tap tap tap..
I agree with everyone else. The developer's bad attitude towards its users and greedy motives for pulling bait-and-switch tactics have left me not feeling happy that Camera+ is coming back. ProCamera has advanced so much in the meantime that TapTapTap may find it hard to compete.
I completely agree with everybody, tap tap tap may never regain the ground they lost due to lack of trust in them as developers, which is a real shame as the app was at the time the best camera replacement app. However we must remember how we all hated their selling tactics, only to later fall in love with the app.
It will be interesting to see how this update fares against the leader of the pack, Pro Camera.
How is what they did Bait and Switch? Their app works exactly as advertised and was available until Apple pulled it. Anyone who bought the app got what they paid for. There was no "switch."
I understand people wanting to know what the status was or the story behind the story, etc... but the animosity from some people is beyond words. As if they came over to your house and deleted the app from your phone and then killed your dog.
@Craig, people are upset because the dev tried to tell Apple they were the boss, by putting code in there app that let them enable a feature that Apple clearly stated was not allowed. Then when Apple rejected the updated that included this shutter trigger feature, they put two fingers up at Apple and leaked the workaround. Then Apple rightly removed the app, leaving us all with no support or further updates, at least until now, so that's why you are seeing these comments.
It's a great camera app. I for one am happy to see it return.
For the record VOL shutter is highly over rated IMO. in my experience it is even more prone to "shake" then just touching the screen.
YMMV
I'll look at the new version if it's a free update to previous version but I won't be giving TapTapTap any more of my money. Camera+ has been replaced by ProCamera on my phone.
Glad to see this back ,
Used This app alot ,,
I have to admit that I await the update anxiously. I still don't care for ProCamera. It feels awkward compared to Camera+ and not as fast to focus. TapTapTap made a mistake and I am not going to punish them or myself by not using what IMO is a superior camera app.
@Glyn Evans
The app you have works as advertised. Many apps don't even upgrade/update at all after purchase. The app works great.
So really what's the beef? They screwed themselves with Apple and lost sales in the interim, But if you already owned the app - what did you really lose?
No support? Did you have a question go unanswered re: the product and it's functionality? I had my questions answered. As have some others I know with the app. So support didn't go away.
The only thing that went away were new updates. And if you feel "screwed" or "cheated" - then that's your prerogative I guess. But also silly if you were to ask me.
I don't expect updates or upgrades. I enjoy them, of course... but don't expect them unless there are issues with the app. And by issues I don't mean things that I wish it had - I mean bugs, etc.
Craig, The issue was TapTapTap's attempt to sneak in a feature that had already been specifically rejected. That was irresponsible, and failing to comment publicly only compounded the problem.
I have found volume-snap to be a very big deal. The phone feels much more like a camera when using it. The action of hitting the volume button feels much more natural, and (at least for me) much less prone to jarring the phone unintentionally.
Some of the iOS updates have enabled some features that would be nice to have in Cam+, like saving metadata to the photo library and HDR. But I'll put up with a lot of shortcomings in exchange for the volume-snap.
I can't get that upset about Cam+'s extended stay in the penalty box, because I've got many other apps that have gone even longer without an update without the excuse of being barred from the App Store.
And I've tried Pro Camera, but have never been able to bond with it.
This is great news! I didn't like that taptaptap has been silent for the past few months and had given up on them to provide any updates, but I don't believe they pulled a bait and switch, so I don't hold this against them. It's a free market, and since they were no longer delivering updates (or so I though), I had moved on to using ProCamera.
But I'm now really looking forward to this update. A few features I'm really hoping for:
1. Video recording
2. Option to jump right into "camera" mode instead of the menu screen
3. Detailed photo editing (contrast, brightness, etc., similar to ProCamera)
I must agree with Craig in this matter. This is an app that worked when I bought it and still works perfectly. So if the company doesn't say anything to us untill now.
THey took a risk and apple took them oout of the race for it.
Weirdly no one complains about Hipstamatics loss in giving a free lens or film as promised to all of us that made an effort to make them go to 35k on facebook.
Why not complain on the developers that actually promise stuff they don't keep.
AMI
@Greg
I just don't see any reason for animosity. Especially from people who OWN the product. Now - for those that wanted to buy it and it was pulled - I can understand FRUSTRATION....
And they had no obligation to comment publicly. And I don't see how them saying what everyone already knew would change anything either. My. 02
@ Craig
Have you read the myriad comments on their blog from users just looking for a response?
Irrespective of the what happened to their application in the App Store, the complete lack of communication from their end especially when faced with the potentially damaging "consumer angst" in the comments on their own blog, was just baffling. As though the company couldn't care less.
Business 101 would suggest a little damage control was needed? But nothing. Not one word. What does that tell you?
Look, they may have been in litigation, but you can still let customers know whats happening, either through their own blog, or another, or through a third party, or an official statement.
Brand loyalty & trust, irrespective of what the 'buy-in' is, is important, and that's what people have an issue with.
Not an altogether unreasonable expectation from a public towards a company who rated transparency with the consumer so highly before this fiasco. They were publishing their quarterly's before this..
@weareborg I don't discount that. But at the end of the day - I, personally think that the end consumer suffered next to nothing other than the feeling of entitlement that they believed they had to know exactly what was going on behind closed doors.
I can just about guarantee you that this is a case of damned if you do and damned if you don't. If they had said something, people would have been all over them for whatever WAS or WAS NOT posted.
Ultimately - everyone is entitled to their opinion and can also vote with their wallet. And for better or worse - and much like Apple itself - if the company produced a product people want or feel they need - people will buy it despite any animosity or frustrations they feel.
