The iPhoneography Showcase of Devon Akmon

About me: My name is Devon Akmon and I live in Ann Arbor, MI. Currently, I am employed as the Deputy Director at the Arab American National Museum in Dearborn, Michigan. As a museum professional, I am most interested in collective memory and new media initiatives.

When I am not at work, I spend much of my time reading, running, cycling, gardening, making/hacking, and hanging out with friends and family. I have a strong interest in the visual arts, community building, urban homesteading and living sustainably. Additionally, I have a strong interest in the art of photography.

Upon finishing my first degree in the late 1990s, I began a short-lived career as a photojournalist working with several of Michigan's largest newspapers. I still cherish the time when shooting photographs was a full-time profession.

During the late 1990s, 35mm photography was very much still the norm. Digital photography was just emerging and the cost of digital cameras was quite expensive. After leaving the profession, I returned to college and began a new career path. However, photography is still a passion of mine.

I still haven't purchased a high-end digital body and these days I am much more interested in shooting photographs with toy cameras and other lo-fi devices. The iPhone is a perfect tool for day-to-day photography. It's small, concealable and it lends itself well to creative image-making.

This year I have tasked myself with shooting at least one iPhone photograph per day. This is my new creative outlet. It forces me to stop and find creative moments during the course of the daily grind. I only allow myself to edit the images on the iPhone (no desktop editing). At the moment, my favorite applications include Hipstamtic, TiltShift Generator, PS Mobile and CameraBag.

I strongly encourage others to explore the world around them with their iPhone or other mobile device!

Your iPhone photography is amazing and inspiring. I rarely think to use my iPhone camera, but as you say, it seems like a really good creative outlet.
