A year in the life of Leeds photographer Helen Turton: An Exhibition in aid of Naomi's Fund

Above: The Art Gallery at Salvo'sI recently discovered Leeds photographer Helen Turton had held an iPhone photography exhibition charting 365 days of her life. The exhibition opened on Wednesday, 3rd February 2010 at Salvo's restaurant, Otley Road, Headingley, Leeds, United Kingdom and runs until the end of April. Unfortunately I was unaware of the exhibition until it had already opened so I was unable to attend the launch party, but I managed to catch up with Helen via email and asked her about the exhibition and her 365 project, and this is what she had to say.

"Basically I started the project because I was finding that as a professional photographer I had stopped shooting for myself. So I set myself the picture a day challenge as a means to tap into my creativity regardless of the clients I was shooting for.  I started the project on my birthday on 2nd Feb 2009. A picture a day started on my 5D Mark II but I was missing moments because I don't have it on me all of the time so when I started using my iPhone I loved the challenge of trying to get great pictures on a not so good camera. I loved the immediacy of it and the quirky-ness of it and eventually the apps that I started discovering just kept my inspiration so high. I also never missed a moment because I always have my iPhone on me.

A good friend of mine who recently lost her 16yr sister to suicide had started a charity called Naomi's Fund (founded to help young people in crisis) it's still in it's infancy and in need of publicity and money so I decided to hold the exhibition and sell each pic for £25, with all of the profit going directly to Naomi's Fund. The opening night went so well with over 160 people turning up. The restaurant (Salvo's) that are displaying the images have been brilliant. They're still there (well what's left) until the end of April so we've another 4 weeks. So far we've sold over 220 of them which I'm really pleased with.

I'd like to say a big thank you to Helen for sharing some of her photos and news about her exhibition with the iPhoneography blog, and don't forget if you are in the UK, then it is not too late to see Helen's remaining photos.
