New iPhone Photo App: Joiner - Collage Camera
Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at 10:00AM |
Glyn Evans A hommage to the "joiners" series by David Hockney
Description from the AppStore: A camera application for making realtime photo collage. The scenery is cut up by sliding your finger on the screen. It is as simple as drawing a picture!
You can make various expressions of photo collage with your ideas: shifting angle/time while taking a photo, putting together different sceneries in a photo.

Editors comments: This is an interesting looking app that offers a unique effect that I have not seen in an iPhone app.
The App
This app is extreamly easy to use, simply launch, tap the little arrow that appears in the bottom left hand corner of the screen and select the photo source, either camera or album. Once the photo has been taken/selected and loaded, you will be presented with a black screen, and from here just tap the screen to reveal parts of the photo, buiding up your collage with a patchwork of tiny prints. When done tap the little arrow again and choose save to photo album or post to Twitter, and that's it you have your own David Hockney "joiners"

So what do I think of Joiner?
I really like this app and the effects it creates, however just like Doublexposure which I reviewed yesterday, it is badly let down by its output size, a very poor 320 x 480 pixels. Again, as with Doublexposure, this is an app to watch, but because of its output size, sadly it only scores 2 stars.

Joiner is not so new. I bought it awhile back and was very disappointed. It looks like you can finally use pictures from your camera roll which is good. I liked the feel of the app and the ability to adjust the size of each frame but the low resolution just killed it for me. I might try it again to see if I can work with any pre-existing pictures though. Hopefully, this app steps up its game soon.
Sooo is there like a new requirement for app developers to NOT give us full resolution? Becuse it really seems that way
I could really do some cool and creative things with this app based on the subject matter that I take pictures of. But this low-res mess is ridiculous.
@xwhiteboy777x, you are correct, I incorrectly titled this post.
I've been playing around with this app and I noticed something neat. You have the ability to add multiple pictures on top of one another. I've been able to come up with a couple neat pictures. I HATE that this app has such low resolution. It would be cool to see a big update sometime. However, I think these developers have other interests.
I figured I would contact the developer to see what the deal was with the low res. This is what he had to say.
Thank you for your interest in Joiner!
About resolution,
Joiner captures the screen real time and
iPhone couldn't produce realtime image more than 72 dpi reason for
their machine power.
So now, on iPhone 3G & 3GS, Joiner couldn't create hight res images.
But with the image from the album, It might possible (need test).
And also next iPhone might possible!?
We must do it in the future, but it always depends on machine power...
Best,

So...there you have it. It looks sounds like they may be doing some testing to see if they can give a higher res with camera roll/photo album pictures. I really didn't expect a response so there may be hope for this app.
