Hot on the heels of SwankoLab, FILM LAB has hit the AppStore

"FilmLab" is a film simulation application program that transforms iPhone to the film camera. The variation of the film effect reaches as many as 79 kinds including a popular film such as Agfa, Ilford, Kodak, EES, and Fuji. The selection and the preview can quickly do these by excellent UI. AppStore Link: FILM LAB - Price £0.59/$0.99

Editors comments: Whilst Europe was asleep FILM LAB from the developer of RetroCamera hit the AppStore. This is a nice app, not too dissimilar to RetroCamera (but with full res support), that for me has a slightly cleaner interface. The key thing for me about this app, is it real film effects that cover the full spectrum of real films from manufacturers like Kodak, Fuji, Agfa and it even has black and white film effects from the likes of Kodak and Ilford.

This app has more than enough to keep anyone happy, and even before reviewing I have no hesitation in saying "go get, you won't regret it", and it's only £0.59/$0.99, BARGAIN!!

Thinking about getting this, but I'm not sure yet. I might wait for the RC update

Yeah FILM LAB offers the largest number of simulated film effects of the most popular analog film of the past & present. Also I might have to say it offers possibly the largest number of B&W film filter effects than any other iPhone photo app to date. With some seriously realistic effective results all for less than a dollar!

does anyone know if RC is even getting an update? I have heard users complaining about its lack of high resolution for-ever!

This app is what a cross-processing fan like me has been waiting for. I really like that I can pick all kinds of film simulations to process my pictures with. The interface to pick films could be better, but what the heck. The results are great, so I hope they'll update the interface to make it a little more user-friendly.

Is it me or it's not possible to save in landscape mode ?

I use to shot almost all my photos landscape, and after buying the app and trying it, all my landscape images are just saved as vertical. So I have to use another app to turn them to original orientation. If this is because I don't know how to do it, could any please tell me how to do it ?

If it's an app problem just solve it please !!

I also had that problem with landscape mode and hope a quick update would fix it. Although I have no choice but to rotate the image on another app which should be completely unessesary.I love the app but this is a "no bueno".

You do have to rotate the photo after the fact if
it's landscape format. I would imagine this
will be fixed. I love this App. I miss the darkroom and that aspect
of choosing the right film for the right photos. Once they kink out the bugs this app will be one of the best on the app store. I can't reccomend this App enough!

YES RetroCamera will have a Full Res update. This will start development later in May.

YES there is the known bug error when saving landscape images & this has been reported to the developers for an update fix.

Although I personally have & use the "Photo Rotate" app on a regular basis for many photo tasks... So that isn't a bothersome issue with me.

There is a Photoshop plug-in called Alien Skin Exposure 2. It simulates the look of popular film stocks. I have used it for more than a year. After buying the Film Lab, I checked it side by side outputs of Film Lab & Exposure. To my surprise, the result is 99% the same. You know, Exposure 2 costs USD249. Film Lab is really a bargain!

Film stocks checked include Fuji Reala, Afga Optima, Kodak Royal Gold 400, Fuji Sensia, Fuji Pro 160C, etc.

@Cary I remember that program. I was sort of thinking the same thing but I did not have access to check out the program side by side. I love the Reala and the Ilford film stocks.

I think this is my new fave program. Just something about having it tied in to real film stocks is great. Part of me wonders though if they will get any flack from Fuji, Kodak and such for using their film names.

I really wish though they had the Fujichrome Velvia 100 type of film. Any Fujichrome would be nice! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE

I also can say: Wow! Really great app.

The film i would like to get in an update is: KODACHROME (25 or 64).

Well spend 79 cent.

Like it a lot :)

I don't know how life can get much better with two new apps in one day....although I am patiently waiting for classic pola to hit the store. Then I'll be happy. Film lab is one terrific app.

April 7, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterSuzé

Considering the features that it offers, $0.99 really sounds like a great deal. I'm still new at this, but I think i'm gonna enjoy experimenting with the different features that the app can do.

Fantastic filters, and indeed a bargain at only 99 cents.
However...79 types of film is waaaaaay too many to have to go through each time. There should be a way to have a shortcut to your favorites, or something! Hope that's implemented when they fix the landscape problem.
