The iPhoneography Showcase of James Velasquez

About me: Growing up in New Orleans, I'm constantly surrounded by a fantastic city and unique culture. Part of my art has been trying to capture aspects of this place that I call home. The relative obscurity of taking pictures with a cell phone has been a great help.

I started learning photography years ago in College with a used Canon FTB SLR  and have been creating art even longer since I was a child. Always fascinated with creating beautiful images, my primary form of expression were the drawings I would create in sketchbooks which I would carry around with me for years. When the iphone was first introduced, I was already intrigued by the possibilities of using the phone as a visual and encyclopedic reference tool to help in my art. Like everyone else, though, I would soon find out just how useful the iphone could be for art once I discovered the wonderful world of apps.

With fantastic apps like hipstamatic, photoforge, tiltshiftgen and many others, the range of effects and simulated film styles is staggering. I'm constantly amazed by the art studio which I now carry in my pocket and still in the process of discovering the limits of this fantastic tool.

Can't view images on an iPad. You'd think a blog dedicated to iPhone photography that uses iOS would allow an iOS to view their images. #fail

I really enjoyed the photographs. (unfortunately I had to get to a laptop to view since the host uses a non-iPhone viewable service to show the pictures...not your fault).

I have a major question about your work. It seems that there are a couple of things in your images that I am unaware how you processed in-phone. Some images have what appear to be multiple exposures and some have text. Many have both. I haven't seen any apps that do what you've done, and I'm curious if you'd be willing to give up your secrets. How did you create these images inside the iPhone?

Thanks so much and I look forward to your response. Great work. Keep it going!

Hi Ryan, Thanks for your comments!

To answer your question about some of those multi-exposures, they're created from a combination of apps. I actually will use different methods on different photos, so it changes.

For quick multi-exposures, blendcam or pictureshow create interesting results, but I also use art programs like art studio where I can work with layers and many other painting tools to create my own effects. It's take more time, but you can create much more complicated pieces.

When I incorporate text, I like to use strip designer. This is a fantastic design and layout app which gives you a lot of options. It's what I used to create the mini-comic.
