App Update: Perfectly Clear version 2.0
Tuesday, August 31, 2010 at 7:34PM |
Glyn Evans WARNING: Do NOT upgrade to this version as it is buggy and crashes whilst saving on the iPhone 3G running iOS 3.x and the iPhone 4.
If you have an iPhone 4, then please ensure you are running iOS 4.0.2, as this seems to fix the crashing problems. Currently there is no fix for older versions of iOS.
Please read the updates below for the latest information on this update.
Perfectly Clear has just been updated to version 2.0, bringing some really nice features, like the automatic noise removal, which is an in app purchase, costing £1.19/$1.99/€1.59.
What's New In Version 2.0
1. Powerful automatic noise removal
- Grainy/noisy images are a major problem with iPhone photos. Until now there has been no iPhone app effectively dealing with this. Powered by our partner Stoik Imaging, we're offering this correction -- specifically optimized for iPhone photos -- as an optional feature via the in app purchase. Unlike other noise removal corrections that blur photos after removing noise, our solution is unique in preserving the crisp details.
2. Ability to share images via
3. Smarter Sharpening
- A revised engine giving you more precise and accurate sharpening. For our Default preset for automatic processing, less sharpening is applied. For your fine tuning needs, the sharpening range has been doubled.
4. Shake out the edit control panel, then shake it back.
5. User defined preset: you can now create your own unique preset for custom results
6. Added settings panel:
- Fewer clicks to save a photo - now when you press the “save button” your photos will be automatically saved to the resolution you set. Note that if you’ve synched your photos via iTunes, your photos will be re-sized by iTunes to 320 X 480 – and this will be the largest size available to save
- Ability to automatically save the original photo taken with iPhone camera through our app

UPDATE: Following some comments on Facebook and some further testing, it looks like Perfectly Clear version 2.0 runs fine on an iPhone 4 running iOS 4.0.2. I was originally running iOS 4.0.1 on my iPhone 4, but following the OS update, which I have just completed, I am now able to fully process a 5 megapixel image with no crashes.
Updating to iOS 4.0.2 should solve the crashing problems on the iPhone 4, and possibly the 3G and 3GS, but if you are running an older iOS, then do not upgrade as the app will not work as advertised.
Stay tuned for further updates.

UPDATE: Just purchased the Noise Removal Add On, and this also seems to work fine on the iPhone 4 running iOS 4.0.2, so at present it looks like if you have an iPhone 4 running the very latest version of the iOS, then you are safe to buy or update, but everyone else should wait for the fix.
Stay tuned for further updates....

UPDATE: I am in talks with Athentech Imaging the developers of Perfectly Clear, and they are investigating the issues being raised by everyone here at the iPhoneography blog and those over at Marty Yawnick's blog, Life in LoFi.

From now on I will check iphoneography.com before I upgrade! I usually check it before I buy.
Horrible update week.
- Buggy Monday: Cross Process
- Buggy Thursday; Perfectly Clear
- Buggy Wednesday: ... Suprise
What are these guys doing?
Especially Perfectly Clear makes me angry. Its a high price app and customers like me expect that quality is delivered. They should give noise reduction for free till the desaster is fixed.
One more suprise this week and i will stop updating anyway. Never touch a running system.
Hopefully i am wrong ;-)
Same bugging crashes when trying to save on my 3G IOS 4.01 And I'm not happy with that. I really do like the app, but if it's gonna bug like this, it's practically worthless. And I can't even downgrade: haven't done any back up...
this doesnt support the iphone 4 resolution ?
why not
Has the 3GS been spared then?
Read your warning too late. It is very buggy - keeps crashing on my 3GS. Also what a cheek charging almost as much for the in app purchase as what the program cost. Don't some developers beta test their apps!
If like me you also updated in iTunes I just found this other way to restore to the previous version over on LifeinLoFi:
"Update: Reader Patrick Timney (SCW) sent me a great tip if you’ve already updated both iPhone and iTunes. He’s given me permission to pass it on here. Thanks, Pat!
If users have a Mac, just look in the Trash. iTunes throws all previous versions in there. So retrieve the app from trash, delete the new version from Applications in iTunes, then drag & drop the previous version into your Applications section of iTunes. Select & sync & you’re golden."
Just tried it and it worked a treat.
I cannot believe that the noise reduction in-app purchase costs as much as the app itself.
Same bugging crashes when trying to save on my 3G / iOS 4.0.2 [with Noise Removal Add On] :-/
Crashes consistently with iOS 4.0.2. The noise reduction option was purchased, albeit reluctantly.
@Bill Adams. Which iPhone do you have?
@Richard. Thanks for the tip.
Updated to Version 2.0 , crashing on IOS 4.01 ....
trying to process , full res images ... crashes
Thanks Glyn and Richard for the info. Upgraded before I saw Glyn's post and what a POS upgrade, crashed every single time I tried to save on my 3GS. I did the downgrade per SCW's tip and it is now saving and behaving as before. I agree with Richard, it is quite audacious to put out a buggy update and also charge the same amount for a feature as the original app. Now that Camera+ has a touch exposure feature I can probably do without this app. It would have been nice if the upgrade had included the sharpening feature without charging for it or at the very least .99.
Crashes for me constantly with os 4.02. I have the iphone 4. Noise reduction would be handy, but I'm not even going to begin to consider buying it until this crashing bug is fixed.
I noticed that Marty suggested rebooting the phone. So I reinstalled the upgrade, rebooted, and exact same thing: crash upon save. So now uninstall redux. Good suggestion though.
Had to check out the "In App" purchase for the noise reduction.
Really need more time to see if what I spent was worth it, If I really need to get the best noise reduction done I'll import into photoshop and use Dfine 2.0 or DeNoise 5.
Really like to do it all in iPhone app's but nothing comes close to noise reduction when using one of these two programs on images using photoshop.
Can't REALLY see the noise reduction offered here that great and worth it so far but as I said still need more testing I guess.
Give it a try, let us know your findings.
Bought this app for noise removal feature reading your "1. Powerful automatic noise removal". I don't want to buy add on for that... I am upset with this app... (((((((((
@Eugene. Sorry you missed the preceding paragraph which read "Perfectly Clear has just been updated to version 2.0, bringing some really nice features, like the automatic noise removal, which is an in app purchase, costing £1.19/$1.99/€1.59." That said when the bugs are ironed out this app including the in app noise reduction purchase will be worth having.
Oops!
I use the iPhone 4, with iOS 4.0.2.
I've reported the problem through the iTunes interface and directly to the developer. Have heard nothing back.
