Apple's September 1st event: iOS 4.1 and HDR photography

There was a surprise announcement at todays Apple's event in San Francisco, as Steve Jobs previewed iOS 4.1, he revealed the camera would now have the ability to capture HDR photos.

In addition to the HDR capabilities, there will be support for uploading HD video to YouTube and MobileMe directly from the iPhone 4.

As soon as iOS 4.1 becomes available I will be testing out its HDR capabilities, so stay tuned.

assuming it works as stated, hdr was pretty much the highlight of today's event for me. but to be honest, i'm a little skeptical because even the example pics they showed didn't look all that impressive to me. well, they didn't seem to be real super nice hdr like some of the amazing shots i've seen elsewhere. hopefully i'm wrong though and in any case it will probably be a nice improvement.

I installed the GM seed on iOS 4.1 on my iPhone4 this afternoon. The HDR capability of the camera app is great. One HUD button to toggle it on/off. No fussing about: taking the two extra shots isn't noticeable, and no lengthy processing time ... Click, it's done. With both regular and HDR pics saved.

I'm really curious how well this feature is going to work. I hope it takes the 3 shots internally without processing them first rather than shoot, wait, shoot, wait, shoot, wait, like right now...

this is not really an hdr..i mean, this is not so postprocessed as the hdrs that we are used to see around. i would rather call it a "exposure compensation". by some pics i've seen this functionality works well on the landscapes but it's pretty useless on indoors and on close up portraits...if you want some great pics you still have to pay for a dslr ;)
