New iPhone Photo App: Pocketbooth

App Store Description: No longer do you have to go to the mall to find a photo booth. Now you can take one along wherever you go, with Pocketbooth: the photobooth that fits in your pocket.

Pocketbooth perfectly replicates the intimacy, spontaneity, and hilarity of a traditional photobooth. Take it to your next party and watch as your friends' inner-divas emerge.

Meticulously designed to emulate the experience of a 1950s-era Model 11 Photobooth, Pocketbooth is as beautiful to look at as it is fun to use. The interface makes taking self-portraits a snap - even if you're using the back-facing camera.

Features:

  • Compatible with iPhone 4, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, and the new iPod touch
  • Use front-facing or rear-facing camera
  • Share photostrips via Email, Twitter, and Facebook
  • Automatically saves strips to the app but can also export them to Camera Roll
  • Highly customizable with different effects and pose options
  • Laugh-out-loud fun!

App Store Link: Pocketbooth; Price: £0.59/$0.99/€0.79

Editors comments: If you have an iPhone 4, then photo booth photo apps can be fun, but you will only need one photo booth app, and my preference is IncrediBooth, which this app has some similarities with.

I do not plan on testing this app out, but if any of you have or do, then please let the rest of us know what you think of it.

I'm a huge fan of Incredibooth and I like the various color effects it has in taking shots.

HOWEVER, that having been said the sheer fact that I can flip the camera around and use the back camera makes this well worth the .99 cents.

Bob, what is the resolution the app saves the strips? Thanks

Regardless of which camera I use, the images (4 panels) are being saved at 489 × 2608

@Bob. Thanks for that quick answer. Could you add the values for Incredibooth also? I guess with the frontcam of iPhone 4 there wil be no better results.

I have a 3GS, so Incredibooth isn't even an option for me. Pocketbooth is really nice -- fantastic attention to detail.

@Tomba...

Incredibooth saves at 520 × 2720, but it also saves single frames at 480 × 640

Pocketbooth images will print at roughly 326 ppi and result in a strip that is 1.5 x 8 inches, which I think is the dames size that is produced in an actual booth.

This app will also produce a 1x3 strip which I think print size is 2x6 inches.

I particularly like the b&w effect in pocketbooth..

And like others have said here, being able to work on a 3G and 3GS is awesome.

Gaah! Developers please once an for all: STOP using photos of Kids or Babies as example material for your app! It just looks awkward! You think this is cute or hip but others find it repulsive!

@Bob thanks again

I will go to Pocket Booth.

Hi everyone - I'm one of the developers of Pocketbooth, and I appreciate the discussion taking place. A few responses:

@loungy - point taken, screenshots updated -- was not intended to be cute or hip, rather shots were uploaded to get app review process going, with the intent to change before showtime. apple (god bless them) review team was a bit faster than anticipated and we were distracted tidying up other things. apologies.

@bill - exactly right -- the output size of the 4-pose option matches the size of analog vintage booths -- we spent a lot of time making sure that was the case.

@bob - thanks for fielding queries. front-facing camera is more accurate in terms of an authentic photobooth experience, but we didn't want to leave older devices out in the cold. also the rear-facing camera is nice when taking group shots or needing to be farther than your arm's length from subject.

@editor - promo code sent via contact form, give it a whirl risk-free!

Feel free to contact me directly if anyone has more questions, and thanks for your interest.

Ability to use back camera for group shots is magic!

The authentic looking photos are also just nice in terms of effects, nothing overly flashy hence great for many applications.

Menus are also more to the point.

even if you already have incredibooth, give this a try!
