App Update: PhotoToMac

PhotoToMac is a great little app that lets you quickly and easily transfer photos via WiFi from your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch to your Mac, and it has just been updated to version 3.0.

So what's new in version 3.0 of PhotoToMac?

  • Transfer of photos and videos is now approximately twice as fast
  • "Select All" and "Custom Select" for all media sources
  • Transferred photos now contain meta data
  • Videos are transferred in full quality (no compression)
  • Support for Events and Faces
  • iPad: all photos are now transferred in full resolution + support for RAW photos
  • Help section with How To info and FAQs
  • PNG images will have a .png extension
  • A lot of UI enhancements
  • iOS 4 required
  • Mac OS 10.5 or higher required

App Store Link: Pocketbooth; Price: £1.19/$1.99/€1.59

You can do all that with a free Dropbox Account & Dropbox App; plus it works over Wifi and 3G...

- With the DropBox app, you have to transfer photos and videos one by one. There is no possibility to do a select all + transfer. Even just 2 or 3 at a time won't work.
- Tranferring photos and videos over 3G will not be very performant.
- Photo meta data is lost when using the DropBox app.
- The DropBox app also compresses video before tranferring it, resulting in loss of quality.

Does it work the other way?
So photo's from my mac to my ipod touch 4g?

@piet

PhotoToMac only works from an iOS device to a Mac, not vice versa.

How is everybody here doing this?
One app for up-and download, two
different ones?
Or the itunes build in option?
I have a ipod touch 4 and an intel imac
with latest os. (both only since a short while so not
much knowledge yet)

When you started PhotoToMac the first time, it asked for permission to use your current location. If you tapped "Don't Allow", PhotoToMac will not be able to access your photos. This is all built in iOS behavior. There is not a lot I can do about it.
Even if you gave PhotoToMac permission to use your location, Location Services has to be turned on when you use the app. Doesn't make sense, but it's like that.

I have contacted Apple with this issue, because it doesn't make sense that iOS shows this dialog in the first place, since PhotoToMac is never actually using your location. Hopefully it gets fixed in a future version of iOS.

The good news is that you can easily work around it. Go to Settings > General > Location Services. Make sure that "Location Services" is on and that the specific setting for PhotoToMac is on too. That should fix it.

@Chris Cornelis and Galarina -

The "Global denied access" error is NOT documented, either in the Help for the app, or on your website. HUGE failure as far as I'm concerned, if I have to resort to Googling an error message just to figure out how to fix what should be a documented problem.
