picfx updated and on sale

picfx, which is a great app from ActiveDevelopment [the same people behind PicFrame and PicTools] has just been updated to version 2.1, and the celebrate this update, and for a limited time, the app is available for FREE.

So what's new in this version?

Well according to the developer, there are 10 new effects [although these are not listed, and so at this time I am not sure what these new effects are], the app is now faster at applying effects, lets you share to Instagram as well as other apps using PhotoAppLink, and as will all updated there are the unspecified "bug fixes".

I wonder why developers insist on having to use square format? That kinda feels like a let down as the effects are quite nice but I want to keep my image the way it was!

I know square format is a new fashion but if you are going to print your photos or use them as wallpapers or anything useful then you don't want them to be square...?

</rant! :)>

I use this app all the time so I am really looking forward to the update. The app will let you save pics in landscape format too. When you open up the landscape pic you want to edit it will appear inside the square box with black bars at the top and bottom. Don't do anything with it at this stage. Just proceed to the filter screen. Your pic will appear 'squashed' in the preview as you apply the filters. Once you are happy with the image save it and it will appear back in your camera role in it's original landscape format with the filters applied. It might be a bug in the app but it works perfectly. I hope they haven't corrected this in the update:)

This does not work with portrait photos but a work around is to rotate your portrait format shot in another app such as Photogene. Then work on it in picfx (you can rotate the filters in the app to get the desired effect). When finished just use Photogene again to rotate the image back to it's original portrait format. It's a bit cumbersome but it works.

@Paul Moore,

That's a very helpful post; thanks. I can confirm that the methods you described still work in the updated version. I like this app; there are some nice filters and the fact you can rotate them is useful.
