iObsessed, the companion app for the book, iPhone Obsessed by Dan Marcolina

I recently reviewed iPhone Obsessed, Photo Editing Experiments with Apps, a book by Dan Marcolina, and awarded it the "rare" iPhoneography recommended award. Well now Dan has released a companion app for the iPad, which serves up over 90 minutes of video tutorials, and more.

This iPad only app that can be used in conjunction with the book, or as a resource in its own right, offers, just as the book does, an fully interactive multimedia experience to its reader.

Created using Adobe's Photoshop Touch SDK, the app lets you interact by swiping the pages from right to left, left to right, or up and down to reveal more of what the book offers. In addition you will find interactive buttons on each page, that lets you interact with the apps Flickr stream [allowing you to leave comments related to each sample photo], Dan's dedicated website, see before and after sample photos, as well as launch detailed video tutorials.

The apps unique interactive features include:

  • Over 90 minutes of detailed video tutorials right in-line with the featured images.
  • Pinch and zoom any image to see its full detail.
  • See before and after of every image and leave comments on the main images right in the app.
  • Over 50 App formulas to follow, 4 Bonus images from the book and 8 free custom High-Res composting textures.
  • Additional surprise links are found on each chapter page.
  • By rotating the iPad vertically, you reveal an interactive compendium of over 30 apps. With video overviews of the key creative features, Web Links Developer Site and iTunes download page.
  • Many many resource links, personal stories and a live gallery of additional images by the author.

If you bought and like the book, then you will just love this extra content interactive learning resource, that priced at £2.99/$4.99/€3.99 [App Store Link], is a must have app for any iPad owner.

Dan has very kindly provided me with 2 promo codes, so if you own an iPad and would like the chance of winning one of these promo codes, then complete the following sentence, and I will select my favourite two.

"I am obsessed about iPhoneography because...."

I am obsessed about iphoneography because it sure beats lugging around a dSLR and post processing on a computer using expensive software.

I am obsessed about iphoneography because it is a true paradigm shift in photography culture - the ability to capture, edit and share your work all from the same device, from almost anywhere, has changed the way we comprehend photography.

I am obsessed with iphoneography because I believe it has revolutionised photography. It has given anyone who owns an iphone the ability to create unique and interesting images using just their phone and a selection of apps, which can then be shared online, in print or right on their phone.

I believe if the likes of Henri Cartier Bresson or Gary Winogrand where still prowling the streets today, they would definitely be carrying iphones and using them as another tool to capture those vanishing moments.

I am obsessed about iPhoneography because as a father of two(currently), there's never a moment that shouldn't be captured on film. But sometimes the iP4otos just don't turn out how I had imagined in the first place and with all the tools available via the appstore, I can create the perfect piece of art. I do however run out of ideas often and sadly many of my pictures look the same. My hope is that with iObsessed that will change.

Thanks for the giveaway.

I am obsessed about iPhoneography because my Iphone is everything but a phone to me: it is a Swiss army knife of the cellular world, a digital password to an analog dreamland, a toy camera emulator extraordinaire. Today it is a Polaroid, a Lomo, a Holga or Diana. Tomorrow a photobooth, a darkroom and printlab. It can emulate different types of lenses and films or glass plate. It renews my interest in photography by opening the door to a world of creative freedom.

Thank you very much for picking my response and giving away the promo code for this app Glyn. I downloaded it yesterday and started going through it with much delectation :-) I believe this will be a great learning experience for me. I tend to not combine effects from multiple apps so much, at least not that many for a single pic, and I have a feeling this app will help me push the limits of creativity further. I have not gotten the book yet but think I probably will now, as I'm really enjoying reading about and discovering the various steps that were used to get a particular photo effect.
