Quick Tip: Grab that shot with QuickPix

If you are a regular reader of this blog, then you will know that I recently went on a trip to Egypt, and what a trip this was.

Whilst there, I did all the usual touristy things, saw and shot plenty of temples etc, and took some staged shots of some of the "locals", all at a cost [$$$], however I wanted to get some natural non staged, non posed shots, and thanks to the £0.59/$0.99/€0.79 QuickPix app [App Store Link], I did.

Whilst traveling via horse and carriage I used QuickPix with its rapid fire mode, and randomly shot and captured the following street scene, something that would have been impossible without this app.

Is QuickPix better at rapid capture than Camera+??

Hi mbunch - I'm the QuickPix dev. Ironically, I love camera+. At least for editing. They have some really great editing filters and their UI is top notch. That being said, I built QuickPix because camera+ wasn't getting the job done for me. I think QuickPix is better at rapid capture for a couple of reasons:

1) You don't have to switch into a burst mode. It's always accessible just by holding the still button. When I want to capture a bunch of shots it's usually because something great just happened and I don't have time to switch into a different mode.

2) The way more important reason is that the camera+ burst is not full resolution. In fact, they are 640x480 on the iPhone 4 (0.3MP). QuickPix produces full 5MP pictures (over 16 times the amount of detail). And they don't make that obvious. I'm sure a lot of people are taking burst mode photos without realizing how much quality they are sacrificing.

Anyway, hope this helps. If you want to try it out, shoot me an email at twoteethtech@gmail.com and I'll try to get you a promo code if I have any left.

Thanks!
Josh

By the way Glyn, I'm so happy to see you got some shots like this. That's exactly what I built the app for. I've gotten so many priceless shots that I couldn't have gotten otherwise. To see others doing the same makes it all worth it.

Cheers,
Josh

Just bought the app based on the great reviews, but, I'm not sure this is the best for me. First, the app is a little faster in the startup than other apps. It is not so significantly faster that this would be the one option that makes QuickPix my default app. Also, the photo browser is way too small and not easy to navigate between pictures. Previewing was slow, and there was no swipe feature or zoom feature in the photo viewing browser. I found myself having to switch back to the stock photos app to get a better look at the shots I took and to show others what shots I had just taken. I understand that one big selling feature is the rapid burst at full res, but I did not find this one feature was enough to bring this camera app to the dock, or make it my "default" camera app, especially given the other shortcomings I mentioned. Overall, there's just not enough here for me. I'll keep track of future updates.

Hi JAG - Sorry to hear of your disappointment with QuickPix. I think your assessment of the preview capabilities are right on. Actually a faster, larger and more elegant preview capability with zoom / swipe, etc. is basically complete. Look for an update soon with that and hopefully some other capabilities we are working on. We'll keep plugging 'til we get your review to 5 stars :-)

Do try the burst from time to time though. I find it indespenable for getting good shots in many situations. See what John Edwin Mason was able to do with it at the race track: http://bit.ly/iV1rzR

Stayed tuned and thanks for trying the app!

Thanks Josh. I checked out the photos by Mr. Mason using QuikPix and I was impressed. Very nice. Of course, being able to adjust the exposure and focus, and the burst feature, are not unique to QuikPix, but perhaps the combination of full res, burst, and exposure adjustment all in one app is what makes your app special. I'll be looking for the update on the photo browser. I'll keep it in my collection of camera apps for more testing.
