App Update: Filterstorm 3.0 now in the App Store, with 50% off

Many of you [including myself] have been patiently waiting for the update to Filterstorm for the iPhone. Well the wait is over, as Filterstorm 3.0 is now available for download from the App Store, and for those who don't already own this high-end app, it's available today and tomorrow for just £1.19/$1.99/€1.59, which is 50% off the normal selling price.

For those who have been closely following Tai Shimizu Tweets, you will already know what to expect in this major update, but for those who haven't, here is what's new.

  • New Interface
  • Live Preview on many filters
  • Export Size Increased to 22MP (iPad 2) 7.5MP (iPhone4/iPad)
  • Watermarks
  • Improved Crop Behavior
  • Flickr Export
  • Dropbox Export
  • Support for Unlimited FTP servers
  • Split Preview Pane on most filters
  • Overlay, Multiply, Add, and Screen blend modes for most filters
  • Ability to show mask with a color overlay
  • More Gradient Masking Options
  • Redeye Brush
  • Vignette Masking
  • More IPTC Fields
  • Save/Load IPTC Sets
  • Improved Borders Tool
  • Redeye Brush
  • Noise Filter
  • Scale to Fit Tool
  • Canvas Size Tool
  • Improved, 30-step history
  • Ability to remove curve points by dragging them significantly off top of curves
  • Ability to use multitouch on curves
  • Ability to load automations through iTunes File Sharing

  • Ability to create new FTP directory at time of export

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed memory issues with RAW handling on iPad 1 (RAW for many cameras now supported)
  • IPTC saving issue fixed

NOTE: FS3 has an updated Automations format. It will upgrade most automations from FS2, but some may not work properly.

Editors comments: If you don't already own this app, then I recommend to grab Filterstorm 3.0 at this offer price, as I can assure you, you won't regret it.

If I have a gross collection of photography apps on my phone, would buying this be worth it?

I've been using FilterStorm2 for some time now. It's an awesome app when it comes to adjusting curves, white balance, temps, vignetting and more. I also love using it to adjust black & white images. Gonna go grab version 3 right now!

I can't see anywhere if this is a free upgrade for 2.0 users. Anyone know??

The new UI is fantastic! That's been the most lacking part of the previous versions.

But the brush tool seems to be a little bit slow when using it to mask for example the double exposure effect. It's always a little bit behind my finger and so it's difficult to get a correct mask.

this looks nice but i can't see a specific area where this app eclipses the functionality of photoforge2, other than automations. is it worth the having if i have PF2? it's not the question of a couple bucks, just of the functionality.

one thing it looks like both apps are missing is a nice blur tool. i've yet to find a photo app that fills the focallab-shaped hole in my heart.

For photo editing Photoforge2 has an excellent implementation of layers with blending modes and masks (photoshop style) while PF2 has a very basic "Add exposure" without blending. Thus for combining images or creating effects Photoforge2 is much more powerful. Unfortunately though, Photoforge2 does not have "brushes" with "gradient filters" or "color selection" filters crippling its basic editing ability. While PF2 has "automations" (saving of steps in an edit) Photoforge2 has an "FX" button instantly imlementing many popular canned toy camera effects. So really neither is really complete.

Had Filterstorm since release and never really used it due to not liking the UI.

Is there something buggy with the crop tool? I'm on a 3GS and tried the new version with one of my pictures. First thing I went to do was crop the image. The sliders did all kinds of weird adjustments to my image; at one point, when I cancelled out of the cropping, I had a masked image, even though all I had been doing is cropping. Sad to say, I'm underwhelmed by this update, finding Filterstorm3 as frustrating to use as FS2 - PhotoForge2 and Iris are still my main go-to apps for fine-tuning my shots. Comments, replies are welcome
