Guest After weeks of intensive speech writing, photo selection and rehearsals, it was finally time for Daniel Holland (Danny Dutch), Robson Santos (iPhoneography London), Leyla Bile (Leyla Kai) and Matthew Burlem (MattyBur) of the London iPhoneography Group to step up and give their talks at the 'London iPhoneographers: Street Photography' event at the Regent Street Apple Store in London on Monday. The turnout was fantastic: the 64-seat theatre was full to capacity, and even with extra chairs brought in, some people still had to stand at the back. There were quite a few iPhone photographers from London and beyond in the audience, as well as many unknown but keen new faces.
After a brief introduction from Robin, the theatre manager at the Apple Store, Daniel kicked off with a heartfelt and convincing explanation of why iPhoneography is so perfect for street photography and such a valid form of photography generally, backed up with 15 of his superb photographs from London and other parts of the world on the big screen. Robson came on next, using his beautiful photos to illustrate how much he enjoys using apps to process his photos and explore the world of colour in his unique and engaging way. Leyla took over from Rob and entertained the audience with her view of life as expressed in her excellent street photographs of various parts of London and the Tube (the London Underground). Matthew came on last and took the opportunity to wittily push the point of how the iPhone is is superior to the SLR for many street photography situations, whilst working his way through his much-admired Polaroid-style shots.
Each photographer received a big round of applause at the end of their talk, and there was a little bit of time left for a brief question and answer session at the end. It was interesting to note that the questions were primarily about the iPhone and its apps rather than street photography generally. And then, after two hours of fascinating insights and wonderful images, the event was over and deemed a tremendous success. Many thanks to all who came and made it so special, and hopefully it won't be too long until the next one! == Matt ==
