Photology, what next?

Following my comments about Photology, I have been exchanging emails with the developer Red Rabbits, regarding the copying v referencing issue that I, and many others have with this app.

The solution
What the developer is proposing, and has already mentioned in the comments of my original post, is to allow the user the option of creating a custom album with the choice of either copying or referencing. Clearly there will be some trade-offs between the two options, for example, referencing will not allow you to sync your albums with Dropbox or Facebook, but if you are like me, and don't require this feature anyway, then this will be no loss.

What's coming?
As a result of my discussions with Red Rabbits, they invited me to join their beta app testing program, which I have gladly accepted, and have already installed and begun testing their first beta of their next release of Photology, which with the exception of copying/referencing, will include and address the following issues.

  • GPS location fixed
  • AM/PM bug fixed
  • Intro video is now only presented on first launch
  • Set a limit at 50 files to be added to an album at a time to avoid crashes
  • Dropbox EXIF/GPS data is not stripped when syncing with Dropbox
  • Prevents the screen to go to sleep while copying/uploading/sharing
  • Added updating message when re-entering the app to avoid it "freezing" while it checks for changes (added or removed files) from the Photos app

Now whilst this is the current list of the fixes and enhancements, please remember, this is only a beta, so things could change or added too, before its final release.

iOS 5
I know there have been some comments regarding this app, and the fact that iOS 5 will have its own custom album feature, but if Apple's attempt at this is anything like there HDR one, then there will still be room for 3rd party apps like Photology, to provide further enhanced album features.

And finally
Whist i have been critical of this app, the developers have been quick to respond, listen, and be open to suggestions, something that I find encouraging for the future of this app.

"referencing will not allow you to sync your albums with Dropbox or Facebook, but if you are like me, and don't require this feature anyway, then this will be no loss."

Exactly. In fact, this behavior makes a lot of sense. If you're copying the files, it's those copies that are synced. For this reason, one idea could be to reference all albums EXCEPT those that are synced. By definition, synced albums would be made up of copies of images.

Just an idea there.

Regardless, if given the option to reference or copy, I will choose to reference the files.

Thank you for this follow up! Can't wait (we're literally not waiting hehe) to make Photology even better with these new approaches. And we would like to welcome Rob (previous comment) as a beta tester too :)
