Coming Soon: Look beyond your photos with AntiCrop

From the developers of TouchRetouch comes AntiCrop. AntiCrop is the first app to ever offer photo "uncropping".

AntiCrop uses unique, highly intellectual content filling algorithms that recognise the outer edges of a photo then replicates them, adding border strips to the image that match seamlessly. Along with uncropping feature, AntiCrop will provide innovative photo straightening technique allowing users to keep original image resolution.

From the 17th January, AntiCrop 1.0 will be available from the App Store, for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad, and will be priced at just £0.69/$0.99/€0.79

I'm looking forwards to seeing how well this actually works. 'Uncropping' is a *very* hard thing to get right, so they deserve major respect if they've done it well.

Still, don't expect miracles from it - if you cut people's heads off on an important shot, it doesn't know what they look like and it won't put the heads back on. The examples they show in the video are all pretty simple cases with simple textures near the edges, so it'll be interesting to see how it copes with a complex scene.

Wow. I am a big fan of TouchRetouch. This looks very interesting.

This looks good. However, the examples used in the promo vid are very simple; I don't think the app is going to give very impressive results with more complex photos. Time will tell. It's a great idea, though, and looks like it is certainly worth the small asking price.

Incidentally, TouchRetouch is excellent and should be on every iPhoneographer's device.

Reminds me of the time I tried to do archaeology by looking at bumps on the ground and then digitally stripping away the earth to uncover remains.

Actually Chris has made me think this AntiCrop could also be a way of making interesting effects and borders by repeated application to complex shots.

John: it might be as good for making 'abstract' stuff as 'uncropping'. Take a small but complex/interesting image, 'uncrop' as far as it'll go (if it has a small limit). Save, then reload the saved image, repeat.

This looks amazing! I can't wait. I wouldn't expect an app like this to work miracles, just like I don't expect TouchRetouch to, but I'm sure it will prove very useful!

This looks insane! I can imagine using this in scenes where the background is simple. I can't knock it, until I try it. However... I look forward to using this App, as I'm a huge fan of 'TouchRetouch'. I believe this App is going to be a great compliment to 'TouchRetouch'. Bring on 'AntiCrop'!

It appears they are using the same or similar algorithm as PS's Content Aware Fill, which doesn't perform perfectly all the time either. I agree, Touch Retouch is an excellent app and this one looks very promising. Finally, some cool apps to buy with the iTunes cards that are burning a hole in my pocket. Anyone know if this will be a universal app?

Oh my! I can think of fun ways to abuse the heck out of this! Can't wait to play!

I wonder how does it 'maintain full resolution'?

I don't know. Like most photo editing apps I personally can't see any use for something like this if I want excellent results. Taking pictures is one thing, but the detail of fine editing usually calls for a program like Ps CS5, a good mouse or pointing device and a well-calibrated monitor. Even the video is deceptive because the fake iphone is almost double the size of a real one.

I've read comments about how the examples look simple... you're absolutely right, but we're not speaking of a desktop software (and I suppose not even something dedicated to pro retoucher): it's an iPhone based app that makes quick editings that many people are not even aware of, and btw it's just the first release... IMHO kudos for it ;)

Just tested. Is a poor app that only clones what is around the borders, with awful results in almost all photos I tried.

I would not recommend this app even with the low starting price.
