The JOBY GripTight Micro Stand, a truly pocketable tripod for your iPhone or iPod touch

The portable and flexible tripod makers Joby, have just released their latest creation, the GripTight Micro Stand. Designed for any smartphone with or without a case, the GripTight Micro Stand grips your smartphone safely and securely via a spring loaded mount/grip, allows multi positioning via a machined aluminium mini ball head, that lets you tilt your smartphone 36° in any direction, and can be quickly unfolded when you need it and folds up compactly to about the size of a car key when you don't.

What do I think of the JOBY GripTight Micro Stand? Well, i've had one of these new mini tripods for a few weeks now, and I have to say, it's the best mini tripod I've ever used. It's light in weight (but not in features). Is so compact that it easily fits in a trouser or shirt pocket, and is quick and easy to deploy. Since I received my GripTight Micro Stand, it has traveled with me at all times, and has now become part of my iPhone camera kit.

For more flexibility, the mount itself can be removed from the Micro Stand and attached to a GorrillaPod, or any standard tripod. If you don't want the Micro Stand, then the mount can be purchased separately.

For regional pricing and/or more information of the GripTight Micro Stand or GripTight Mount, then head over to Joby.com

Love this idea - looks really clean, but prevents vertical mounting. Anything in the works to allow both? Sooooo close!

Looks nice but it holds the phone in the center. Not good for panos. I get tired of holding my phone between my index finger and thumb at the very end of the phone (lining up with the camera lens) and try to spin it on those pivot points to get better panos.

Can it be confirmed that this mount will fit an iPhone with a Lifeproof case? Otterbox Defender?

Thanks! :)

This looks like one versatile stand that's designed for the iPhone. Simple design and functionality - that's something really good about this one. They made this pocket-friendly is really super!

This looks great but I won't be ordering from Joby's website as the total cost, including UK shipping, comes to a whopping $50/£30 for the GripTight Micro Stand. I hope these accessories make an appearance on Amazon soon.

This is a tough choice between the Millimount on Kickstarter as I like how compact Joby's is, but I'm thinking about the Millimount since I would use the windshield mount often.... hrmnmn

Greetings from JOBY! Let me see if I can answer some of these questions.

1) Vertical mounting. The GripTight Micro that's reviewed here is the one we created to be ultra-portable but also useful for just reading or watching video. You could just buy the mount portion (http://joby.com/smartphones/griptight-mount/ ) and pair it with a tripod with a ballhead to get a vertical mount. You could get the GripTight GorillaPod (http://joby.com/smartphones/griptight-gorillapod-stand ) and get vertical shots by either just bending the tripod to take a vertical shot or wrapping the tripod around something vertical. You can combine the mount with our GorillaPod Magnetic and stick the legs onto something metal.

2) Using the GripTight for panos. The ballhead in the Micro stand is meant to keep your iPhone positioned at a given angle. It isn't meant for smooth panning. For that, you should just unscrew the grip mount and use it with a smooth ballhead. Or you could combine it with our GorillaPod Video camera tripod which has an omni-directional head plus a control lever.

3) Working with cases. We didn't like how a lot of products (including one of our older ones) would only work with one iPhone version or make you get rid of your case. So we designed the GripTight mount coils to extend up to 2.8 inches which means it should grip any iPhone and almost any case that doesn't make your iPhone taller than 2.8 inches total on its side (this also gives you some amount of iphone version future-proofing.) The rubber grip pads on the clamp + the coils in the grip should snugly grip your iphone + case.

4) UK availability. The GripTight line should be available in the UK pretty soon. You can contact our UK distributor at http://daymen.co.uk/contact for who gets it and when.

5) Windshield mount...Well, we had one guy use the GripTight Gorillapod stand to hang his phone on the stem of his rear view mirror (ahem). I've seen some folks use it by spreading out its flexible legs out almost flat to make a dashboard stand.

Hope that answers your questions!

I recently received my GripTight Mount (I ordered without the minipod) and I'm happy to report that it's definitely awesome! It'll fit a even the Otterbox Defender case and I have no trouble fitting it to my Lifeproof set up! It's light, compact, and easy to use. Kudos to Joby for creating a great product!
