Give your photos and videos an extra boost with Camera Boost

Originally released for the iPad, Camera Boost from interealtime.com has just gone universal, and so now you can add an extra boost to your iPhone.

"Camera Boost was built for one purpose: to improve the iPhone and iPad cameras without compromise.

Want to use HDR with video? In low light? With noise reduction? And image enhancement to bring out the colours, correct white balance and add some contrast? No problem. Camera Boost will handle it effortlessly, recording HD video with live full quality preview and zero processing time!"

Device support:

  • iPhone 4S: Full resolution (8 megapixel) photos, 720p video
  • iPhone 5: Full resolution (8 megapixel) photos, 1080p video
  • iPad 2: Full resolution photos (1280x720), 720p video
  • iPad 3rd and 4th gen, iPad Mini: Full resolution (5 megapixel) photos, 1080p video

Hey, I was just in the middle of emailing Glyn about this :D

I'm the developer of Camera Boost, so if you have any questions fire away :)
Any chance of adding an option to import an image from the camera to post-process?

A very neat and uncluttered interface. Great help notes - very clear.

MomentsForZen: Yes, import / editing is on the to-do list. Might be a few months before it's ready - it's going to be pretty powerful :)
I didn't notice that iPhone 4 was not supported, but it downloaded and installed from the App Store anyway. Screen was dark green. Saw the requirement afterwards. Strange that the App Store would let me install the app.

Ron: Yeah, that's an unfortunate issue.

Apple let us specify lots of things that the app requires to work, and it uses that list to determine if your phone is supported or not, and whether to let you buy/install it. However, they don't let us specify the CPU required (which is the main difference between the 4/4S, and the thing the app requires). In fact, there's no way to specify that the app will work on the 4S but not on the 4, so we can't actually set it to work on the 4S but not the 4 :(

I'll be looking at the 4 though in the next couple of weeks. It may be possible to get the app running in photo mode (no video support). Would you be interested in beta testing? If so drop me a line (chris (at) interealtime.com).
Bought it. Pretty good though too many useless presets (who really wants negative reversed photos or blue toned photos etc). Not enough artistic photographic presets like bleach bypass, cinematic, action, blockbuster, etc. Maybe I could make them using the supplied building blocks, maybe not, I don't know - I think there is more to a quality filter than adding a color emphasis and some HDR contrast. Apps like AremaC at least have lots of photographic presets that are useful and more available online. Perhaps camera boost could grow in this direction. Would love to see a real time 'clarity' filter.
Also - exporting photos to my camera roll and then deleting them all is painful - I have to select each photo one by one to tag them all, it needs a "select all" function. Or an "export all and delete".

tcab: Thanks for replying - this is exactly the kind of feedback I need to improve the app.

The presets.. well, I'll be updating them in the next update, as it includes additional image controls. But don't expect major changes to that part just yet, because I have something very special planned for the presets which will see that part completely replaced in the next few months. (And yes, there will be an online part for sharing presets at some point).

The album will get a lot of love soon too. I'll see if I can add a 'select all' button and 'export and delete' in the next update though - it's annoying me too ;)

If you're interested in taking a look at the beta versions please drop me a like (chris (at) interealtime.com), more feedback like this would be much appreciated!
tcab: By the way, Camera Boost is applying the equivalent to a light 'clarity' filter with the default settings. Clarity (from what I can tell at least) is just mild local contrast (or HDR enhancement as it's called in Camera Boost) and saturation enhancement. Compare photos from camera boost (default settings) and the standard camera app, and you should see the difference - it's subtle, but there. And that means that you can record video with 'clarity' too of course :)

Camera Boost is applying the local contrast in a different way to camera+, so the results will be a little different. Both ways have their pros and cons - camera+ can over-saturate the colours, camera boost has that 'glow' effect around objects when you turn it up. I've been thinking about a new way of doing this that removes the glow effect, hopefully it will fit in with the rest of the processing engine.
Hey Chris I left some feedback about night mode crashing the app,I just think that it might just be my 4s instead of maybe a wide spread problem,it might be because I'm still on ios 5.0.1,
In other words don't pull your hair out trying to fix it for the small minority of folks that chose not to update....thanks bro

Ps..NightCap is pretty much my default camera now,it's that awesome

Vcast: no, it's a known issue that slipped through. It tries to check for the new 'high ISO' mode and enable it on the iPhone 5, but the way it checks fails on iOS 5. It's already fixed, so it'll be sorted in the next update.

Hopefully the update will be done fairly soon. Quite a few things are fixed, there are a few new colour controls in the FX panel, but iPhone 3GS/4 support is proving tricky. I want to keep as much as possible on those devices - ideally everything, but I doubt that's possible.

I also need to figure out whether to finish adding a few experimental features or save them for the following update. Tilt-shift type effects are actually in the current builds, and so is a new HDR contrast that has much better quality (here's that realtime clarity filter! :) But both need a fair bit of work to finalise. We'll see.
