VSCO Cam™, the "beautifully simple camera app"

Described as a "beautifully simple camera app", VSCO Cam™ from the Visual Supply Company (the people behind the very popular VSCO Film plugins for Adobe Lightroom and Apple's Aperture) is an easy-to-use iPhone camera app which offers minimal processing options. Developed with a sleek interface and streamlined workflow in mind, VSCO Cam™ lets you quickly create images that can be shared via major social media networks like Facebook and Instagram or your very own (coming soon) VSCO Site.

VSCO Cam™ lives up to its description, being a very simple, basic app, that produces simple yet pleasing results. The app does lack essentials like crop, rotate and frames, but does offer 3 nice black and white, and 7 colour predefined filter effects, along with the ability to adjust brightness, contrast as well as add film like grain. With support for up to full-res, VSCO Cam™ is compatible with both the iPhone 4 and 4S, however in tests I found save times from the apps light-box to camera roll very slow, taking around 30 seconds per image.

Despite only being priced at £0.69/$0.99/€0.79, I'm not sure if this app offers enough, or is worth buying just yet, but it is definitely an app to watch.

I've been waiting for this app for a while now and so far I love it. It's exactly what I've been looking for. This filters are simple and really beautiful.

The majority of the reviews in the Appstore do not seem to be real, anyone else think this?

That video just might be the worst thing I've ever seen. It's all fluff and no real stuff. They need to show what their stuff DOES instead of trying to razzledazzle with video editing wizardry. Sheesh. And, yeah, the app store reviews sure look fake.

That's a shame since this could be a really cool app.

So far I only shot indoors, in low light, and the results are very impressive. There is no white balance button, yet the colors are true without the yellow-orange tint common in other apps (with the exception of NighCap, which I found to be brilliant in all aspects for indoors, and am using Mattebox for outdoors). There is no split exposure and focus, but if it performs as well outdoors where I often get a grayish/dull cast, it's a keeper.

Why would they be fake? They are a company that a lot of professional photographers use and I bet a lot of them wanted this app. It's basically a pocket sized version of their awesome film presets for Lightroom and Aperture.

It's actually not a bad little app. The filters are quite nice, and the options to edit (if also a series of presets) do enough to make pleasant and subtle changes to your photos. There's not much lag between taking pictures, but the saves times to 'full' resolution (which on my iPhone 4 is 1936x2592) to your Album are slow-ish, but not slow enough to make it a hindrance. Bear in mind that the app saves photos to an in-app 'lightbox' before you save to your album.

Not a go-to app just yet, (Lens+ has better filters + optional borders + cropping tools, but not the image editing tools that vsco has) but for 79c too good an opportunity to turn down!

Looks like cool app. However it is hard to realize it by the means of the video.
The idea of such application attracts me a lot, and I think I'll pay for it.

Are the filters live in the 'viewfinder' or does it aply them afterwards?
April 27, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMiku
They're not live, you put them on after the fact.
April 27, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterIan Grant
@Miku - no, they're applied afterwards.

Wow! I think it's a very cool app. Hope the next update that the photos can be cut, then the whole top app.

Downloaded this app and absolutely love it. Can only imagine how great it will be with future updates.

Render time is slow, but I just took two still life's of my two boys and the results are excellent!

Why is it that some are quick to judge the honesty of reviewers? Sad, really.

Only thing I cant figure out is if this app zooms, do I just have to zoom in and crop in the edit?

I do like the app so far. Shoots fast. Saves a little slow. Would be cool if you could choose white bars rather than black, when exporting to instagram. Filters and adjustments are nice. Definately worth the entry price.

VSCO is a very good app for 79cent. UI is minimalistic but very good. The filters are great and the results are good looking.
If they can improve the time for saving to the camera roll you can recommend the app a 100%

It is now one of my favorite cameras on the iPhone. I like the speed at which it takes the photos. It has never crashed or lost a photo either. The quality on the basic photo is really great, and the few edits I make are quality too.
