Schneider Optics 2x Telephoto Lens now available for the iPhone

You may recall back in January, Schneider Optics demonstrated and announced the pending release of their 2x Telephoto iPro Lens for the iPhone. Well the good news is, this, what should be an excellent addition to the iPro System, is now available to order. Priced at $105 USD, this new lens halves the iPhones camera field of view from 62° to 31° for stills, and from 46° to 23° for video, giving a 35mm equivalent focal length of 60mm and 84mm respectively.

I will be reviewing this new lens as soon as it arrives at iPhoneography HQ, but if you can't wait to order yours, then more information and ordering options can be found at iprolens.com

@D_C - I disagree, it's good to get good reviews on different options available. I think Glyn does a decent job at keeping a neutral view when reviewing and it gives us a chance to see if it's worth spending the money or not.

Thanks Glyn for keeping up with these, some of us appreciate it :)

With these telephotos, do they also push the backround out of focus on an iphone ?
Cheers

What ever happened to JUST using the iPhone ONLY for iPhotography?

With all these attachments for this and that it makes the iphone NON what it is, next thing you know the Hubbell telescope will be connected to the iPhone.

Really miss the direction of the site were images and app's were what it is all about, reviews and such. Seem to go days without great content. Adding stuff to the iPhone is NOT what it's all about or is it? It starts to look like a science project for iPhotography!!!

What happened?

Miss the real days.

I look forward to seeing image samples! The other tele lenses I've seen don't turn out all too good.

@digital artist

Times change. It's nice to see things evolve and there be a world of options at everyone's fingertips. iPhoneography isn't a clearly defined "thing" with rules.

The purest in me likes to keep it 100% iPhone.

I am sure others are the same way, look at some of those items for the iPhone and they look like something from outer space or a science project.

Really?

Things change but why NOT just use a DSLR?

@Gordon if your lens arrives before mine, then please let me know what you think of it.

@Jules, I'm not sure, but it'll definitely be covered when I do my review.

@Digital Artist. Just as the iPhone has evolved from a low-res LoFi camera to an 8 megapixel camera that can rival many point and shooters, so has iPhoneography, and the accessories (both lenses and cases) that I have been featuring lately, all help make the experience for some (me included), more enjoyable. That said, the core/heart of iPhoneography will never change, as it's all about shooting, editing and sharing from this one single device.

Hi Digital Artist,

I sold my DSLR. I sold it as I found my creativity was greater with my iphone. I could take, process and share images on my phone easier than with my DSLR and PC/MAC. I could create image with my phone that I had no idea how to achieve with my DSLR and PC/Photoshop. My ideal piece of hardware is possibly a DSLR with all the functionality of the iPhone.

It appears that DSLR manufacturers are not heading that direction as fast as third parties and Apple are heading towards adding DSLR type performance to the phone. Schneider are a CLASS lens manufacturer. I am hoping that the addition of this little lens will allow me to create better initial images for me to work on within my iPhone.

Did you see the that Apple filed a patent for adding interchangeable optics to their iphone? Sounds like they are considering adding different focal length lenses to the thing themselves at some point. What will you do at that point? Go back to the original iPhone? Dismiss those who upgrade to the new phone as somehow selling out?

The thing is just a tool to help me create art. Whether it's got a big handle attached or a superexpensive add on lens...it's just a tool.

As has been said. The hardware evolves.

I just got this lens and am disappointed to find that it does not fit in the Diffcase adapter. Apparently, Schneider shortened the "neck" of the mount by .5mm or so and that results in it not catching in the Diffcase adapter. Has anyone else experienced this or have I gotten a bad sample?

It does fit in the Schneider case, though very tightly.

Hi Bob, my 2x iPro has just arrived, and yes you are correct, it wont fit the DiffCase adaptor. The good news is, Diff are now aware of the problem and are working on a new adaptor, so we should be all good again in a few weeks :-)

I got a very quick response from Jim at Diffcase and he confirms your comment Glyn. I am very please at how quickly they are addressing the issue. They have promised a fix as soon as they work it out. Great customer service.
