5 Yrs Later

Here's an interesting alternate to the usual photo sharing app. 5 Yrs Later lets you take or import a photo, upload it to the developers server, and then 5 years later have it emailed to the emails addresses specified during the upload sharing process.

When I first heard about this app, I did have concerns that the service would still be up and running in 5 years, so I contacted the developer Tom Broucke, who assured me the service would be still running, saying "the service is running on my own server (where I host other websites and stuff). So it will always be available. I couldn't live with myself if I would just stop the service, it's just not professional."

The suggested uses for 5 Yrs Later are:

  • Take a picture of your baby, see the changes when he/she is 5 years older.
  • Take a picture of your first kiss. Surprise your partner with the picture. (also a good reminder)
  • Take a picture of yourself, see how you changed over the years
  • Prank your friend. Let him know one year later

5 Yrs Later is currently available from the App Store priced £0.69/$0.99/€0.79

What if, God forbid, something happens to Tom and he can no longer maintain the server?

the developer sounds like a lone bedroom programmer. Why on earth would anyone want to upload their private, personal photos, to some complete stranger's server (wherever he or the server may be) and then trust them to 1) No to abuse that photo in that time and 2) Return the photo safely after 5 years. This is possibly the creepiest app I have ever heard of. "Give me your photos for 5 years, I promise not to do anything with them and promise to give them back to you.. and you can trust me because the computer where I will store your photo has other stuff on it as well" ummm ok... no thank you. I don't even know why app this was reviewed on this site as it has nothing to do with photography - this is more of a storage / back up thing.
