Editors comments: This app was originally released on the 2nd October priced at £0.59/$0.99, but yesterday the price was dropped and the app became available for free.

The app is interesting boasting 22 filter effects, however the app and effects are let down by their execution. After loading a photo you select a filter by tapping on the Filters menu/icon on the apps home screen, however to see the effect on your photo you then have to tap on Preview. Whilst there is a Revert/undo icon, the effects are not applied dynamically making applying effects a little frustrating, and this lets down what could be a nice app.

In an already overcrowded app market this app is badly let down by its poor UI, but as it is currently available for free, then it is worth a go.

The iPhoneography Showcase of Stephan Pearce

I am your typical average joe when it comes to photography.  I don't have any background in photography or arts, nor do I have experience with anything beyond a cheap digital camera.  So, everything that I do with any of my photographs is completely self taught.  Back when I was younger in high school, I had a great interest in art.  But, ever since, it's kind of slipped away from me as life twist and turned me toward a different direction.  But, with the iPhone, it's come back to me (and that's not a cheap Apple shill).

Inspiration revitalized.  And really, most of it came down to me stumbling on this blog and seeing just what other people have been doing with their iPhones.  And...WOW.

I really like the tag line in the title of the Best Camera app: "The best camera is the one that's with you." This holds true.  The idea of taking a great photograph is capturing the moment, in the moment.  Every day, at any point of the day this particular scene will capture my total attention in a second, even if it's for just a second, if not shorter than that.  Whether it's the way a naked tree bends, taller than the family of trees full of leaves below it or an old couple holding hands.  In that one brief second, no matter what's going on in your life, how well or badly things are going, in that one brief second...you see just how beautiful this life is.

Just so happens my cellphone, that's -always- in my pocket...has a camera.  With the 3GS, not so bad of a camera either!  But, it's not just that, the fact that with the functionality of the iPhone, it's crazy what you can do with your photographs after you take them.  Even though I'm quite proficient in Photoshop, I've actually somehow found myself not even touching a computer with my pictures.  I tend to end up doing all of my post-processing from the iPhone and entirely with the iPhone all the way down to uploading them.

Let us remember those who fell

The eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month marks the signing of the Armistice, on 11th November 1918, to signal the end of World War One.

At 11 am on 11 November 1918 the guns of the Western Front fell silent after more than four years continuous warfare.

Let us remember all those men and women who were killed during the two World Wars and other conflicts.

New iPhone Photo App: MonoPhix

Description from the AppStore: Monochrome pictures can be amazingly beautiful, but only if you have the right tool available.

The tool you are looking for has three different kinds of Monochrome filters aboard, has an easy eye-catching single touch interface and doesn't pillage you in the pocket. It's called MonoPhix.

With MonoPhix you can create Monochrome images from your pictures with one touch. Even advanced image editing apps on your mac/pc require multiple filters and adjustments to create these high depth and high quality monochrome images.

Other than other iPhone apps, MonoPhix uses a special technique to create depth without losing quality, hence creating the most beautiful Black & White effects possible on any platform.

Black and white photography is an art and you could be the artist today.

FEATURES :

  • High Resolution support
  • Normal quick Monochrome filter comparable to other apps
  • Deep Monochrome filter with special depth generation
  • Hard Monochrome filter for classic monochrome without grayshades
  • Easy to use
  • Eye-catching interface with dock

Editors comments: This is another one of those black and white apps, but is it any better than the rest of them? read on to find out.

The app

MonoPhix is easy to use and has a simple clean interface.  After you launch the app you are presented with the apps splash/home screen and from here you load a photo from your camera roll/photo album. Having selected and loaded your photo you then have the option to select Gray Mono, Deep Mono or Hard Mono from the icons/buttons at the bottom of the screen. Select the effect you want and and then either tap Save to save the photo or Return to undo the effect and select one of the others.

Over all this is not a bad app, but like all apps the final effect heavily depends on the exposure and type of photo being used. Overall I still prefer the black and white effects achievable with the filters found in Tiffen's Photo fx or Cool fx, than with this, or any other black and white app (with the exception of Spica) currently available for the iPhone, but if you like the look of the results below, then give this app a go, after all it's only £0.59/$0.99.
