iPhone App Review: Auto Adjust Returns to the App Store

by Marty Yawnick

"Still one of the better exposure enhancement apps available." -- MY

Auto Adjust
Version 2.6

Exposure enhancement app Auto Adjust by Joe Macirowski has reappeared in the App store after a brief hiatus and a few bug fixes, most importantly the removal of the repurchase screen which angered many users.

Unlike many flash fix apps, Auto Adjust uses “contrast stretching” or normalization to help correct exposure. Its adjustable enhancement produces excellent results on many images that would otherwise be lost due to underexposure as well as automatically correcting the contrast of more properly exposed images. Auto Adjust has been one of my go-to apps since its introduction.

There are other apps that use normalization for exposure correction, but I’ve found Auto Adjust easily and consistently produces superior results with good color, saturation and the least amount of noise that you’re going to get from running exposure correction processing. It tweaks the contrast of moderately underexposed images, but this app can sometimes work miracles on images I initially thought were too dark to be useful.

Auto Adjust screenshotMost of the time, the Auto settings work great for me with no tinkering on my part. For finer control, there are three Levels sliders which produce similar results to Photoshop’s Input and Output Levels sliders, as well as a Saturation adjustment. There is a toggle switch for easy before and after previews of your adjustments — a great feature that saves time and frustration. If you don’t like your tweaks and want to start over, shake your iPhone to reset the sliders back to default — a nice but undocumented feature.

Auto Adjust uses a unique rendering method which provides instant onscreen previews of level adjustments — no waiting. It saves in full resolution on all current iPhones.

One of the bug fixes in this version is the removal of a “repurchase” bug that many users experienced and angrily reacted to — a bug in which all users (even those who’d previously downloaded the app) were asked to “upgrade” in order to save their images. This has been fixed in the current version and the app has been restored to the traditional method of purchase-up-front. I even deleted the app from my iPhone and redownload it from the App Store to be sure the app didn’t ask me to pay to upgrade or to repurchase.

In an email explaining this issue, developer Joe Macirowski wrote, “A bug on my part that I’ve since found is that it didn’t enable saving immediately and a relaunch was needed, but you will not be charged twice. The storekit prevents this. The record of the purchase is saved to the device’s preferences and therefore a fresh install would lack the “purchased” flag. So looking it up in the store again would be necessary.”

(I never experienced the original repurchase request firsthand, so I am unable to verify exactly what happened.)

Auto Adjust is a good app for iPhoneographers looking to rescue an image. It’s also great for casual iPhone photography for quickly and easily massaging a snapshot before you email, upload or MMS.

Not all exposure enhancement apps work the same on the same image. An image that still looks bad with one app may be usable when fixed with another. I keep several exposure enhancement apps on my iPhone for that reason. AutoAdjust is one of them. It’s one of the better exposure enhancement apps available in the App Store. I still highly recommend it.

Auto Adjust is available as a Universal Binary app for both iPhone and iPad for $0.99 USD.

Auto Adjust update

If you read my review of Auto Adjust, then you will know that I recommended this app for quickly fixing poorly exposed photos taken with the iPhone.  Well now developer Joe Macirowski has just updated this great little app with the following new features, giving more control over the adjustments you can make to the blacks, whites and mid-tones, making this more than just a quick fix app.

What's new:

  • Independent adjustment of Blacks, Whites, Mids, and Saturation.
  • High performance progressive preview rendering.
  • More intuitive exponential sliders.
  • Logarithmic Gamma adjustment.
  • Much faster processing and saving times.
  • Lossless floating point processing.

Auto Adjust gets bug fix

If you read my mini review of Auto Adjust, then you will know that despite this app geting my 'Recommended' award, it had what I considered to be a major bug, and that was an image rotation issue.  As mention in the review, a bug fix had been submitted by the developer to the AppStore, and yesterday this update became available, fixing this and other minor processing issues.

Auto Adjust price reduction

Following an email to the developer and my comments about Auto Adjust, there is some good news about this excellent little app.

The first bit of good news, is the orientation bug has been found and an fix update submitted to the AppStore which will hopefully be available soon.

The second bit of good news, is the developer has listened to my suggestion and reduced the price of Auto Adjust to just £0.59/$0.99, and so now with the submitted bug fix update and the price reduction this app gets my recommendation.

Don't forget this app is NOT another flash emulation app, but an exposure correction app that is quick and easy to use, and whilst it does not work for all photos, you will be surprised just how much it can improve what appears to be correctly exposed shots, and it's all done quickly and easily.

New iPhone Photo App: Auto Adjust

Description from the AppStore: Auto Adjust is a lightweight utility for performing "Contrast Stretching" (normalization) on the all too frequent dim or white, washed-out image that the iPhone built-in camera takes.

Typical Contrast Stretching (Auto Levels or Auto Contrast in Photoshop) interatively analyze an image to find the brightest and dimmest pixels (in greyscale). However, an otherwise dark image with one bright spot will span the entire range from 0 to 255 and no adjustments will be made. This limitation is overcome by processing the full histogram of the image and doing some discrete calculus.

Images are processed and saved at their original resolutions. This can lead to some longer processing times on 2048x1536 iPhone 3GS images but it's worth the wait!

AppStore Link: Auto Adjust - Price £1.19/$1.99

Editors comments: Although a little overpriced, I found this app very useful for quickly correcting my poorly exposed iPhone photos. This app is not another one of those flash emulators, but allows you to correct shots with strong high or low lights, which as my sample shot below shows, the white walls of the house has affected the exposure which has been more evenly balanced with in seconds by using Auto Adjust.

Above: Original photo on the left, and the Auto Adjust version on the rightThere is a free light version of this app [Auto Adjust FREE], however it only saves at 480x320 and does not have the fine tuning (intensity) slider bar of this full paid version.

There is one major bug that I have found with this app, and it seems to be one that is becoming more common, and that is it gets the orientation of the photo wrong, and so you will need an app top rotate and correct the saved photo.

All-in-all I found this a useful app for quick exposure corrections, and one that I will continue to use, and gets 3 stars out of 5 from me. It falls short of getting 5 stars due to the above mentioned bug and its price, which I would have liked to have seen at £0.59/$0.99 due to it being a one trick pony, albeit a very good one trick pony.
