Book Review part 2 of 4: The Art of iPhoneography by Stephanie Roberts

Looking like an oversized iPhone, and a cross between Chase Jarvis's "The Best Camera is the One That's With You™" and Allan Hoffman's "Create Great iPhone Photos", The Art of iPhoneography written by award winning documentary photographer Stephanie Roberts offers an in-depth look at some of Stephanie's favourite photo apps, Adobe's Photoshop Express, Tilt Shift Focus, Photo FX, Hipstamatic and Lo-Mob, as well as an overview of her other essential iPhone photo apps.

Just like Allan Hoffman's book, the first section covers the iPhone's default camera apps, giving you tips on how to get the best out of them.

Then Stephanie goes on to explore her top apps showing before and after examples of her own photographs, that have been processed with these apps.

Midway through, Stephanie attempts to to inspire the reader with more examples of her iPhoneography, with missions, making the reader look and think about the composition, style and apps used, and this approach has worked really well, and is thought provoking, it even made me think.

As you near the end of the book, Stephanie dedicates a nice section to those iPhoneographers that have impressed and inspired her, and many others, like Dixon Hamby, Dominique Jost and Max Berkowitz to name just a few, giving you an insight in to the way they work, and their photographic styles.

Finally, the book ends with a guide to sharing your photos with the world via Posterous and Flickr, and a short section on useful resources, which includes this blog [thanks Stephanie].

Currently priced at a bargain $12.87 on Amazon.com or £6.49 on Amazon.co.uk, this is a nicely presented, thought provoking and inspiring book, that would suit any new or seasoned iPhoneographer.

iPhoneography makes it to the magazines

iPhoneography finally get recognized by the photo press, as this months American Photo magazine has an article all about iPhoneography.  The article is a little lacking in content, but does cover 4 well know photographers that all use their iPhones to capture that moment, and is a move the right direction.

The iPhoneographers covered in this article are, Chase Jarvis, Lisa Wiseman, Greg Schmigel (who we've covered on here) and Sion Fullana who we covered here and famously got a photo shot as a result of appearing on this blog.

There are a few apps covered in the article along with some other professional photographers who are using their iPhone to capture the things they see.

If you in the USA you should be able to pick up a copy of Novembers American Photo magazine, but if like me you are from elsewhere then you can get your electronic copy of the magazine via Zinio.

Now all we need is a dedicated iPhoneography magazine, and maybe something the iPhoneography blog should do, but what do you all think?

Book Review: The Best Camera is the One That's with You: iPhone Photography by Chase Jarvis

Chase Jarvis's iPhone photography ecosystem rolls on with the 3rd element in this project. First came the app 'Best Camera' and community website 'The Best Camera', and now his book of photos all taken with his iPhone, titled 'The Best Camera is the One That's with You' has hit the streets.

The book is a nicely presented 6"x6" paper back containing over 200 photos charting the past year of Chase's iPhoneography journey, and contains a wide range of iPhone photos, which depending on your tastes you will either like, dislike or think are just plain rubbish, but in Chase's words "What you're holding in your hands is a chunk of me. My guts. My process. My study. It's a look into the production of my ideas."

As you flick through the book you will notice that each photo has a description of some kind, and then at irregular intervals Chase breaks up his photos by adding a little note about that photo on the facing page.

Like Chase says "Writers have notepads, painters have sketchbooks, and I have a camera that's always with me", and this statement is true for all photographers, whether they be regular photographers or iPhoneographers.

Overall this is a nice book of photo art that should appeal to most of us, inspiring us all to shoot more photos with our iPhones, and priced at a reasonable £11.99/$13.59 from Amazon (although prices will vary) will sit nicely on any iPhoneographers coffee table.
