Among The Redwoods, a short film from DiffCase

This short film was shot at a park in Northern California with an iPhone 4 housed in a DiffCase.

Having used the DiffCase myself (see this video), and despite my original reservations about this case, I can vouch that the DiffCase mounts nicely to any tripod or dolly-slider, and allows much greater flexibility for iPhone filmmakers, than any other case I've used to date.

More information on the DiffCase can be found here.

The DiffCase, a follow-up to my quick look

Following on from my comments on the DiffCase, Jim Armstrong from DiffCase got in touch to let me know that they have produced the following video to address mine and others concerns.

Having used the DiffCase in anger, I can say that it performed extremely well. My wife managed to drop my iPhone from about 3ft and the phone and case stayed intact, and this past week I used it for a video shoot, and the light shade was perfect for the job. Whilst the DiffCase does still have some design issues (access to the connector is a real problem), I have found it to be a very useful case for shooting video and for providing good all-round protection, but it's still not quite an everyday use case. That said, this is a 1st generation design, and I look forward to seeing what the 2nd generation has to offer when it has been finalised and put in to production.

More information on the DiffCase, and how to fit and use it can be found here.

The DiffCase, a quick look

I recently received a couple of DiffCase's for a project that I'm working on (more news on this at a later date), and so before the shoot I decided to put the case through its paces, and here are my thoughts on this uniquely different iPhone case.

The case comes in 2 halves, a top and bottom. Fitting your iPhone inside the case is easy, simply just place the iPhone in the bottom half, then clip the two halves together, and you're done.

The case is not overly bulky, and offers some nice features, like a sun shade which will aid viewing the iPhone screen in bright sunlight, the dual tripod mounts for vertical and horizontal mounting, and keyring clip that can be used to either attach keys to, or used to clip your cased iPhone to a belt loop.

Despite some of these niceties, the case has a slightly cheap almost affix kit feel about it, with the hinged lid/sun shade feeling particularly cheap and fragile, with its thin plastic pinned hinges that look like they will break all too easily (only time will tell how sturdy these pinned hinges are). In addition to the feel of this case, I found the charge cable difficult, but not impossible to remove, due to the positioning of the tripod mount.

Whilst I would not use this case for everyday use, it is one that I will be packing for my holidays (vacation), alongside the sun cream, as the sunshade and all-round protection this case offers are perfect for long journeys and rough treks.

Sponsored post: DiffCase, the iPhone case with a difference

Expect more from your case. Do more with it. Be Diff.

DiffCase is an innovative design company based in Northern California, and the people behind the new DiffCase for the iPhone. In a recent statement the company said, "We believe that smart iPhone case design should keep pace with and compliment the ways smart phones are being used today. A case should do more than simply protect, it should enhance, enable and perform."

The DiffCase offers the following, and all in one design.

  • Better Visibility. When outdoors, you no longer need to use your hand to block the sun in order to get a clearer view of the iPhone screen. The Diff’s adjustable sun shade lid (similar to the top flag on a professional camera’s matte box) does that job for you.
  • More Privacy. In public areas like coffee shops, the subway, etc., you can keep your texts, tweets, social and email messages private. Diff’s adjustable privacy hood feature makes it so folks can’t easily peer over and see your iPhone’s screen.
  • Greater Functionality. Using Diff case you can mount your iPhone to any standard tripod vertically or horizontally. Great for iPhone photography, (iPhoneography), iPhone video, time-lapse photography, hand-held action iMovies and more.
  • Viewing Options. Diff’s lid doubles as a kickstand to prop the iPhone up for hands-free viewing. It easily snaps on and off the front or back of the iPhone case. Place on screen-side when you need it, snap it to the back when you don’t. Use two flags for double-sided iPhone protection.
  • Glass Protection. Diff’s durable, hard plastic lid also serves as your iPhone screen and iPhone glass protector.
  • iPhone Protection. The Diff’s tough full-surround side bumper protects your iPhone from drops.
  • Clip & Carry. Diff case has a unique through-hole so you can safely hook your iPhone to a back pack, camera bag, belt-loop or purse using a key ring, carabiner clip or other tethering device.
  • More Comfort. The Diff’s ergonomic palm bump is nicely balanced and very comfortable when holding your iPhone. It fits your palm and provides a real comfy place to rest your thumb and fingers.
  • Travel Wallet. The Diff case is design to fit one credit card and or a personal I.D. per side. The Diff’s cover/lid has tiny snap features keeping it securely closed - protecting your property.

The DiffCase is designed for the iPhone 4 and 4s, comes in black, hot pink or red, and is currently available for $30 USD plus shipping.
