Flickr app update, takes on Instagram, and could win

Today, Yahoo! updated its own Flickr app, and looks set to give Instagram and other photo sharing networks a run for their money. The once industry standard photo sharing network has fallen behind in recent years, however with this app update looks set to challenge its rivals head-on, and with a much richer experience.

Completely redesigned, the iPhone only app (no native iPad version yet), looks better, is easier to use, and now includes 16 unique filter effects, that can be applied during the upload stage and at the same time saved back to the iPhones camera roll, at full resolution.

In addition to the apps previous lack lustre features, this update offers...

  • Simple sign-up and registration process
  • 16 unique camera filters
  • Full Groups capabilities
  • Explore interesting photos from around the world and nearby
  • And more!

Flickr app gets minor update

Flickr's on iPhone photo app Flickr today gets a very very minor update giving it the ability to save photos with press and hold on photo detail or share button.

I still prefer to use Mobile Fotos for my Flickr uploads, but at least these continued tweaks by Flickr on their app shows they are committed to the iPhone and their users.

New iPhone Photo App: Flickr

Today finally sees Yahoo release an official iPhone app for uploading your photos to Flickr

Description from the AppStore: Share your photos. Watch the world. Flickr® for the iPhone enables photo-sharing on the go - from your phone, to the world.

Shoot, upload and share photos & videos: Geo-tag your photos or add them to a set. View your photos by set and tag.

Explore the world: Search photos & videos from the Flickr community all over the world - by subject, people, or places.

Editors comments: I held off posting news about this app until I had chance to download and try it out. Whilst this may be the official Flickr app, from an upload point of view it only offers basic features which can already be found in other apps like Flickit, and is nowhere near as feature rich as apps like Mobile Fotos, which have the ability to upload to Flickr groups.

I know this is version 1.0 of Flickr, and that I have only been able to play with it for a short while, but for me this is a disappointing app from Yahoo/Flickr, and will not steer me away from Mobile Fotos.

I am sure lots of you will disagree with my view, so feel free to post your comments and debate this app.
