Video: "Sharkoon" a short film by Dan Bakst & Dan Nguyen

As this short film from Dan Bakst and Dan Nguyen shows, I think it is amazing what videographers are doing with their iPhones, the right vision and imagination, and the different video apps that are available.

To make this video, Dan and Dan used a GLIF tripod mount, and apps iSupr8 and almostDSLR.

Glif, the iPhone 4 tripod mount and stand

Glif is a simple iPhone 4 accessory with two primary functions.

  1. Mounting your iPhone to a standard tripod.
  2. Acting as a kickstand to prop your phone up at an angle.

This neat looking accessory, which will be made from Santoprene hard rubber, and hold the phone securely, is the brainchild of Thomas Gerhardt, a software and hardware developer, and Dan Provost a interaction designer/blogger.

The idea for the Glif was first formed when both Thomas and Dan realized the iPhone 4 was literally the best camera they'd ever owned. With the addition of HD video recording and High Dynamic Range photography, it was clear Apple was positioning the iPhone as a very high quality portable camera. But because of its small form factor (and Apple's minimalist design approach) it will never contain a threaded nut for attaching a tripod - standard on almost all photo and video cameras. Solutions for mounting an iPhone to a tripod exist (DIY or otherwise) but they are typically bulky and cumbersome. Thomas and Dan's goal was to create something small, simple, and elegant, and looking at the video, I think they have achieved this.

The Glif is not yet in production, but is a Kickstarter project.  For more information about the Glif, and and how you can pre-order one, head over to theglif.com
