New iPhone Photo App: Old Photo Reel

Description from the AppStore: As if you are viewing set of film negative strip, FX Reel wraps 12 distinctive effects into a fresh "Reel" user interface.

By simply sliding the reel you will discover 9 creative Black and White effects, 3 Sepia effects, and 3 Cyanotype effects all with different levels of local contrast and other settings.

Tap on the image to view full size; or simply save the result to Camera Roll. Discover the side of your own photos you have never noticed before!

AppStore Link: Old Photo Reel - Price £0.59/$0.99

Editors comments: Old Photo Reel is the same app as FX Reel: Mono which I reviewed back last August 2009.  From the developer of iFlashReady, which for a long time was my recommended image correction app, Old Photo Reel, like its twin, FX Reel: Mono, has a nice easy to use interface along with some nice mono results, but just like FX Reel: Mono, it saves at a pathetic 480 x 360 pixels!!  When I bought this app, I was a bit skeptical, as on the face of it, it looked like a remake of FX Reel: Mono, but I had hoped for full-res support, but I was wrong and right at the same time.  Wrong for thinking it would support full-res, right for thinking it was a remake of FX Reel: Mono.

I am not going to rate this app, as I feel badly let down by what used to be an excellent developer, and one that had told me they wanted to produce the best photo apps available for the iPhone.  Not only do I feel let down, but as this app is nothing more that a renamed FX Reel: Mono, I also feel ripped off, so my advise would be, "don't waste your money on this app".

Photo app updates

Over the past week some of my most favourite photo apps, and those that have been featured on this blog received updates, but rather than create separate posts for each I have decided to rap the updates all in one post, so here goes.

First off the mark is Best Camera, which received the following minor update.

  • New option to Auto-save your original photo when shooting with the camera
  • Facebook sharing now uploads to the "Mobile Uploads" album

Then iFlashReady was updated to address bugs related to the stability of the app, but sadly this has not fixed the app crashes I've been experiencing.

Apps that we've covered, but not necessarily recommended have also been updated, and these include...

Camera Plus, which now boasts...

  • The innovative point zoom
  • The best quality Flash for free
  • One tap access to Camera Roll

...but sadly still does not support full resolution. Despite this app being free, the same effect could be achieved by cropping your photos at a later stage.

iStalin got an update, adding a whole host of new features and bug fixes, as well as having its price reduced to £0.59/$0.99

NEW FEATURES:

  • Share your pics on Facebook directly from iStalin

NEW ADDITIONS:

  • 5 new stickers

CHANGES:

  • Changed the background colors of several stickers in order to blend better on the pictures

BUG FIXES

  • performance improvement when selecting an image
  • fix picture rotation depending on the camera position
  • fixed 2 possible memory leaks
  • less memory consumption
  • use the same background picture for stickers and texts
  • fixed stickers and texts flickering while zooming
  • keep current scroll position of background picture after selecting a new text or sticker

Mill Colour, whilst not my favourite of apps got a much needed boost for iPhone 3GS users with...

  • Added support for the higher resolution camera in the iPhone 3GS, with image sizes up to 2048 x 1536
  • Increased the default resolution to 1280 x 960, up from the more conservative 1024 x 768. Changes can be made in the Application Preferences, in Settings

...and all for FREE!!

And finally

TiltShift Generator was updated, with the most requested feature...

  • Hi resolutaion image export.

...as well as some minor tweakes like:

  • Twitpic, yfrog supports.
  • Small UI improvement
  • Tutorial is addes.

So that was this weeks key updates for me, and I may even be tempted to buy iStalin at its current low price of just £0.59/$0.99

My top iPhone photo apps

There have been several post recently on various blogs listing peoples top iPhone apps, so I've decided chuck my hat in to the ring and post my current crop of favourite photo apps, so here goes.

1. CameraBag
CameraBag [AppStore Link] lets me enhance my iPhone photos with 10 different effects filters, and whilst this app needs a much needed update for iPhone 3GS users, it still delivers what I am looking for on my iPhone 3G.

2. iFlashReady
iFlashReady [AppStore Link] lets me enhance/lighten the poorly exposed photos that I sometimes get from my iPhone.

3. ShakeItPhoto
ShakeItPhoto [AppStore Link] gives me that instant photo experience, and is currently my favourite iPolaroid app.

4. Spica - Super Monochrome
I love high contrast and grainy/gritty black and white photos, and Spica - Super Monochrome [AppStore Link] give me that.

5. AutoStitch
For me AutoStitch [AppStore Link] is the easiest app for creating panoramic photos on you iPhone.

6. EffectsLab
Originally I did not like this app when it was first released, but after spending time playing with it, EffectsLab [AppStore Link] has become my pocket Photoshop of choice, allowing me to manipulate almost all aspects on my photos.

7. Polarize
Polarize [AppStore Link] is another instant photo app, but has the added bonus of letting me add market pen notes to my iPolaroids.

8. HiCon Pro
If I need to add some extra contrast and saturation to a photo quickly and easily, then HiCon Pro [AppStore Link] is the first app I turn to, and on most occasions delivers what I am looking for.

9. Photo fx
Photo fx [AppStore Link] and Cool fx have slipped down my list of used apps, but they both still remain in my top 10, but I now tend to use them in combination with other apps like Spica Super Monochrome to add that extra dimension to my photos.

10. Cool fx
Like Photo fx, Cool fx [AppStore Link] has slipped down my list of used apps, but they both still remain in my top 10, but I now tend to use them in combination with other apps like Spica Super Monochrome to add that extra dimension to my photos.

In addition to these editing/effects apps I also use Mobile Fotos [AppStore Link] for uploading my photos to Flickr, Tumblr [AppStore Link] for uploading to my Tumblr blogs and occasionally PicPosterous [AppStore Link] for my new Posterous blogs, although I do prefer to email my photos to Posterous rather than use their iPhone app.

Ah, and there's one last thing. There is an app that would have made it in to my top 5, but it is currently only available to a select group of beta testers (of which I am one), and so can't be listed just yet.

You may or may not agree with my list, or even the order they are in, so please feel free to post your favourite apps in the comments section below.

Another free app misses the mark

Yesterday I posted news on Flash for Free, another free app from developers "Free the Apps!", so I decided to compare this app with iFlashReady, and below are the results.

Now I am not afraid to publicly shout out that I a big fan of iFlashReady, and I have to admit that the developers of Flash for Free have made a commendable effort with their app, but whilst the results achieved are lighter, they lack any contrast and punch. Whilst Flash for Free costs nothing, if you want an app that delivers the acceptable results, then you will need to pay for it, and as the saying goes "you don't get something for nothing"

Sadly this is another instance where a free app misses the mark!!

iFlashReady revisited

For those of you who have been following this blog for some time you will have seen my review of iFlashReady, and for those of you who are fairly new to this site you may not have seen that review. Well iFlashReady has recently been updated, and whilst on holiday I used the app quite a bit, and as anyone with either the original iPhone of the iPhone 3G will know the exposure at times can be way off target. This is where iFlashReady comes in handy, so for those of you not familiar with with app, and those who may have forgotten about it, I have decided to revisit the app with a quick review.

iFlashReady basically brightens any dull photos quickly and easily, and can salvage a photo destine for the trash bin to one you can add to your photo album.

Simply launch iFlashReadyand and tap "Choose a Photo to Start", then select a photo from your Camera Roll/Photo Albums and let iFlashReady do its work. You will notice when your photo loads that iFlashReady by default selects the 2nd of the three enhancements and for most this option is adequate, however if not then touching on the Flash/lightening strike icons either side of the default one will produce varied effects. When you happy with the previewed effect, simply tap "Save" and the lightened photo is saved to the Camera Roll, and that's it your done.

Above: Original photo with out iFlashReadyAbove: The same photo with iFlashReady default settingThere are a couple of things that I should point out, the first is the final result can look a little grainy with added noise, but this will very much depend on the photo you are trying to salvage. The second, is this new version can crash after saving a photo, but a reboot of your iPhone should fix this, and is something the developer is actively looking at.

iFlashReady gets update

One of my favourite apps, iFlashReady has just been update to version 2.0. This neat little app that lets you quickly and easily brighten up your iPhone photos.

Without a flash, the iPhone camera often takes under-exposed and low-contrast pictures when lighting is poor. iFlashReady is a one-of-a-kind software specifically designed to enhance the photos taken by the iPhone camera by reproducing the effect of a camera flash. With a click of a button, you can add low, medium, or high levels of fill-in flash effect to reveal details in the dark regions, or light up the entire photo to achieve improved brightness, contrast, and color.

iFlashReady can also enhance photos imported by iTunes on iPod Touch or iPhone.

iFlashReady is based on an innovative algorithm that intelligently lightens up each pixel to an individually differentiated level. Even if the entire photo is lightened up, the details in highlights are not blown out. The internal parameters are specially configured for the iPhone camera.

So what's new

  • Save result in 1600x1200, 1024x768, 640x480 sizes.
  • Faster preview
  • Overall performance improvements
  • Fine-tuned algorithm output quality
  • Sample showcase images

Even if you don't think your iPhone photos need it, this app will surprise you. To celebrate the release of this new version we have 15, yes 15 promo codes to give away, so if you have a US iTunes account and would like to try out this app, then make you request here.

AppStore Link: iFlashReady - Price £0.59 ($.99)

If you like the effects the iPhone app gives, then you might like to know that there is a PC/Mac version also available here at the special price of $19.99, which is 60% off the apps regular price of $49.99.
