What is it? Diptic is an app that lets you quickly and easily combine two or three of your photos to create a new image.
Who is it for? People who want to tell a story with their photos. With Diptic you can quickly and easily:
- Create a before-and-after sequence
- Produce a photographic series
- Juxtapose contrasting images
- Create photo collages
How does it work? Just choose a layout, select your photos, place the photos in position and save to your camera roll or email to a friend.
OK, so that's what the developer has to say about Diptic, but what is it really like?
Diptic is a universal app, which means it can run on either the iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad, with all three devices sharing the same user interface (UI), letting you create Diptych or Triptych photos.
What is Diptych photography?
A diptych is a photograph that uses two different or identical images side by side to form one single image. The two images can be in contact with each other, or separated by a border or frame.
What is a Triptych photography?
Above: The meaning of Diptych
Just like Diptych photography consists of two images side by side to form a single image, so Triptych photography is a photograph that uses three different or identical images side by side to form one single image, and just as with Diptych, the three images can be in contact with each other, or separated by a border or frame.
The app
To use Diptic, launch the app and select 1 of the 5 Diptych layouts, then tap each of the square/rectangled areas and load a photo to that area. Do this for all quares/rectangles, using your fingers to pinch to zoom and position each photo with in their frames. If after positioning your images you need/want to flip them or rotate them 90 degrees, then select "Transform" from the menu options found across the bottom of the screen...
...and tap on the photo in question to flip/mirror or rotate. When this stage is complete you can change the colour and thickness of the Diptic/Diptych border by
selecting the "Effects" option at the bottom of the screen, followed by the "Border" option found in the top right. From here you can make the necessary adjustments by using the sliders, but here you will find adjusting the border thickness crops the photos. Once complete, simply tap "Export" and then either save to the camera roll/photo album, or send as an email, and that's Diptic.

So what do I think of Diptic?
I really like the simplicity and ease of use of this app, with only 2 negative things to say. The first is the output resolution is only 1024 x 1024, which whilst perfect for online use, is not good enough for printing (if that's something you want to do), and the other thing, is, I would like to see some more layout options.
Diptic does exactly what it says on the tin, and apart from the 2 small issues, I can find nothing else to complain about, and so give Diptic 5 stars, recommending it to anyone who wants to create Diptych or Triptych photos.
