Bad news for broken iPhone photo apps

Following on from my original post listing the photo apps that no longer work following the iPhone 3.0 update, there seems to be some good news and some bad news.

The good news is that most of the popular photo apps that did not work with 3.0, apps like Pano, have been updated and now work.

The bad news is, that it looks like those apps that Apple now say are using unauthorised API's or use of camera interface like QuadCamera and Darkroom, may never work as the comment from reader Jacques indicates.

"Just got an update from Apple Expert support in Texas, their stance is that it is up to each developer to provide support for existing apps under 3.0 or if you do want to attempt a refund of the app you must also contact the developer of the app. So if the developers say they have working versions and Apple is just denying them, then we are at a stand still."

The current apps that still do not work, and may never work due to Apple's stance are:

  • QuadCamera
  • Darkroom and Darkroom Premium
  • Quick Shot
  • Bullcam
  • Molopix
  • 25shot
  • StandardCam
  • NightCamera
  • Genius Camera
  • Zoom Camera
  • SepiaCamera
  • MicroSurface
  • iview
  • Chimera
  • ProCamera
  • DeloriCam

If I have missed any broken apps then please add them to the comments and I will update this list of broken apps.

If you have any working apps, then please check out the list in my previous post and update any new working apps via that posts comments.

Discussion: iPhone 3.0 upgrade experiences

If you have been brave or foolish enough (you decide) to upgrade your iPhone 3G to OS 3.0, then please post your experiences below, which photo apps still work, and more importantly which apps don't.

iPhone OS 3.0 video

If you can't wait, or are like me unsure if I really want to update your iPhone 3G to 3.0 later today, then check out this video by Michael Sherlock.

To be honest I will not be updating my iPhone, as I am off to Cyprus very soon and do not want to risk having any more problems with my iPhone (I've already had 2 replacement iPhone's in the past few days), especially whilst away from the UK.

iPhone 3.0 can select multiple photos

When I posted "What does iPhone 3.0 bring to existing iPhoneographers?" and made the comment of nothing, I was wrong. This may only be a small feature, but you can of course select multiple photos from the photo album and share via email or MMS, as well as copy or delete them.

There is also some reports that the camera in existing iPhones takes slightly improved photos, but only time will tell if this is right or wrong.

For a complete run down of the new iPhone OS 3.0 check out this article over at iLounge, and they also have one of the first hands on reviews here.

What does iPhone 3.0 bring to existing iPhoneographers?

A week ago at WWDC 2009, Apple announced version the public release of 3.0 of the iPhone OS, and whilst the new OS will offer....

  • Cut, Copy & Paste
  • Landscape Keyboard
  • MMS
  • Spotlight Search
  • Voice Memos
  • Improved Calendar
  • Buy Films, TV Programmes and Audiobooks
  • Enhanced Stocks App
  • Safari Improvements
  • Internet Tethering
  • Stereo Bluetooth
  • Automatic Wi-Fi Login
  • Sync Notes
  • Parental Controls
  • iTunes Store Account
  • YouTube Login
  • Shake to Shuffle
  • New Languages
  • MobileMe Find My iPhone and Remote Wipe
  • Run the Latest Apps

....to existing iPhone owners.

Whilst these new enhancements are welcomed, sadly there is nothing new for us iPhoneographers. I had hope that Apple would have given us the video feature despite the existing iPhone only having a 2.0 megapixel camera, but sadly they have decided against this.

So sadly the answer to "What does iPhone 3.0 bring to existing iPhoneographers?" is nothing.

iPhone 3.0 takes better photos

Over at AppleInsider they have just published and interesting article about the quality of photos taken on the current iPhone 3G running version 3.0 of the iPhones OS.

Below are excerpts from the AppleInsider post, but the full article can be found here.

"Beta versions of Apple's iPhone 3.0 software are consistently producing clearer, more detailed photos when running on the same iPhone 3G hardware as the latest public release of the software, new tests show."

"The folks over at iPhones.ru ran a series of tests 30 times over in which they compared photos of the same objects or scenes taken on an iPhone 3G running iPhone Software 2.2.1 with another running a beta of iPhone Software 3.0."
"Gizmodo followed up with a brief test of its own in a dark lighting scenario -- one of the iPhone camera's weak spots -- and similarly found the iPhone running 3.0 to have produced a much clearer snapshot with better detail in dark areas of the scene"
This looks to be good news for all us iPhoneographers not planning to upgrade to the new improved iPhone when it become available later this summer, and even more promising for those who do upgrade.

If there are any photo application developers out there, please let us know if you are seeing these same improvements.
