The TUAW how-to make iPhone videos sparkle with iMovie

OK, it's no good, when I get back to the UK I'm going to have to find the £400+ GBP to buy the new iPhone 3GS, as I'm missing out on a whole lot of fun and it is restricting the content I can post here on the iPhoneography blog.

Anyway until then and following on from yesterdays post, Steven Sande over at TUAW has posted a follow-up article to his "how-to guide to iPhone 3GS video recording and editing" entitled "how-to make iPhone videos sparkle with iMovie".

Below are the 4 steps that Steven uses to import and edit his iPhone 3GS video clips, but if you head over to the TUAW website you can read in more detail these steps and see a sample video, so until I have my own 3GS, and can post my own how-to's this and the previous post is well worth checking out.

  1. Copy the video over to your Mac using iPhoto or Image Capture
  2. Launch iMovie on your Mac.
  3. In iMovie '09, select File > Import > Movies...
  4. Now that the video has been imported, you can begin to play with it.

Note: I have tweaked these steps slightly based on TUAW reader comments.

Some of the comments over at TUAW are worth reading, as they offer some additional advise not covered in Steven's article. Some of the comments are also a little negative towards Steven's post, but if you are new to the iPhone, have a Mac and are not familiar with iMovie, then this post is a good starting point.

The TUAW how-to guide to iPhone 3GS video recording and editing

I haven't got an iPhone 3G S yet due to the upgrade costs in the UK, and the fact that I flew out of the UK for my annual holidays on the very same day that O2 released the 3G S. Because of this my posts related to video on the iPhone 3G S are limited, but thankfully TUAW have a nice little write up by Steven Sande over at their site.

Below are a couple of extracts from Steve's post, so if you like it and want to read more, then hop on over to their website.

Recording video with your iPhone 3GS

"Shooting video with the 3GS is incredibly simple. To begin, fire up the Camera app, which performs both still and video camera functions. To switch into video mode from the default photo mode, you simply slide the toggle at the bottom right of the camera preview display to the right towards the video camera icon. The usual shutter button at the bottom of the camera preview display is replaced by a button with a red "LED" in the middle of it." "To begin recording, you simply tap on the button, and the LED begins flashing."

Editing your video

"Editing is a bit of a misnomer. I'm sure somebody out there is working on the iMovie of the iPhone world, but at this point you are limited to trimming the video."

Viewing your video

"To view the video on your iPhone 3GS, tap on the Photos icon or tap the image icon of the most recent video/photo in the lower left corner of the camera preview display to move from the Camera app to the Photos app. When the Photos app appears, any video snapshots that you've taken show up with a video camera icon and clip duration on their camera roll icon."

YouTube mobile uploads up by 400%

The YouTube blog is reporting that since the iPhone 3G S was released, uploads have increased from mobile devices by 400% per day. This is a staggering increase, but not surprising considering the ease of use, ease of editing and ease of uploading to YouTube directly from this new iPhone.

iPhone 3G S photos reveals EXIF data

The good people over at iLounge have just posted news that "photos taken with the iPhone 3G S are saved in 2048 x 1536 resolution, with a file size of around 1MB."

They also point out that "EXIF data on photos taken with the 3G S also shows evidence of auto exposure, auto white balance, and auto focus adjustments, with focal length data; the data also shows a listing for ISO speed."

What does the iPhone 3G S offer us iPhoneographers?

Well my last post covered the iPhone 3.0 OS upgrade that whilst offers a great deal of new features to existing iPhone owners, offers nothing new to us iPhoneographers.

This is a very brief post covering what the iPhone 3G S will bring to iPhoneography.

Firstly the iPhone 3G S has an improved 3.0 megapixel camera, then there's the addition of auto white balance and improved low light photography, but the biggest and best feature for me anyway is the selective autofocus camera with macro facility.

In addition to the improved camera features, the iPhone 3G S now brings a new dimension to the world of digital imagery, and that is video recording and editing. The iPhone 3G S now not only allows you to capture events has they happen, but also lets you edit the footage right on the iPhone and share via email, MMS, MobileMe or YouTube.

This new and exciting dimension to the iPhone will attract a whole new bread of iPhoneographers called iVideographers, and a side of the iPhone that the iPhoneography blog will be welcoming. embracing and covering all under the one banner.
