Perfectly Clear version 3.0 hits the App Store, and is now Universal

Click to see full size image.

A few days after my exclusive preview, the updated version of Perfectly Clear from Athentech Imaging, has hit the App Store.

Now a universal app, this update puts the intelligent image correction app back to the top of its game, and with support for up to 22 megapixels on the 3rd and 4th generation iPad, this update should prove popular with photographers who like to shoot with their DSLR's and edit in the field on their iPad's, making this a must have app, and a truly all-rounder.

So, what's new in Perfectly Clear v3.0

  • Completely redesigned interface: even more intuitive and fun to use. Includes time saving presets!
  • Universal App: now you can run our award winning app on your iPhone or iPad.
  • Powerful noise removal: built right in, no need for in-app purchase
  • Beautify: Automatically applies breakthrough technology to render flawless skin, sparkling eyes and teeth.
  • New "De-Purple" correction: fixes the phenomenon when the camera is pointed at or near the sun or bright light source, causing extreme purple in the image - one click and Perfectly Clear makes an unusable image awesome!

Supported file sizes:

  • iPhone 4 and 4S = 12 megapixels
  • iPhone 5 = 22.5 megapixels
  • iPad 1 = 8 megapixels
  • iPad 2 = 12 megapixels
  • 3rd & 4th Generation iPad = 22.5 megapixels

Exclusive Preview: Perfectly Clear v3, with Purple Haze Fix

As a leading blogger (and not just someone who copies and pastes App Store descriptions) and respected member of the iPhoneography community, I very often get asked by developers and hardware companies to take a look at their apps or products prior to release, and Athentech Imaging, the people behind top app Perfectly Clear, is just one of the companies that involves me in their app development process. As a result, I've been fortunate enough to have been given exclusive access to Perfectly Clear version 3, which subject to Apple's approval process, should be appearing in the App Store, any day soon.

Perfectly Clear v3: Athentech Imaging have completely re-written Perfectly Clear, and so if you're an existing user, then you are in for a pleasant surprise, when version 3 hits the App Store. Whilst the fundamentals are still the same, with the app still using Athentech's industry standard algorithms to automatically correct and improve your iPhone photos, the UI (user interface) has been completely updated, being optimised for both the iPhone 4 and iPhone 5, and offering improved handling.

In addition to all the features existing users are familiar with, this new (yet to be released) version includes features not previously seen in Perfectly Clear, and as the sample images below show, includes a very impressive fix for the iPhone 5's purple haze issue.

Above: Photo 1 is the uncorrected test image that shows the purple haze issue that can affect some iPhone 5 photos. Image 2 is the same image corrected with Camera Fix (see previous post), whist this final image, has been corrected with Perfectly Clear v3 using the apps de-purple mode.

If you like the look of Perfectly Clear v3, then look out for my full review, which I will post as soon as the apps becomes publicly available in the App Store.

My Apps up close and personal: Perfectly Clear

Following on from the success of my posts "645 PRO: my settings up close and personal", and "What's in My Camera Bag", I've decided to run a new series of posts, that bring together and expands these previous posts. In this new series called "My Apps up close and personal", I will discus all the apps I use (not just the core ones), and why, and how I use them.

If you have been taking photos with an iPhone from the very beginning, then you will be well aware that exposure in both the 1st and 2nd generation devices was very poor, which resulted in dark and dull images. This spawned a number of applications that attempted to correct/improve the exposure/brightness of these dark and dull images. Whilst most of these applications did a really great job, in August 2009, Athentech Imaging released Perfectly Clear, bringing their "Dynamic Range Correction" technology to the iPhone, and quickly becoming the number one app in its class, setting new standards in image correction.

Despite massive improvements of image and exposure quality with each new version of the iPhone, Perfectly Clear still remains part of my core camera bag apps, because there are still times when either I incorrectly set the exposure, or the iPhone itself incorrectly exposes the scene, and so when this happens, I use Perfectly Clear to salvage the image.

There was a time when the app fell from grace, and was cast out in to the wilderness due to poor stability and lack of full-res support on the iPhone 4S, but thankfully, the team behind the app have resolved all past issues, and the app for me anyway, is back on top of its game.

So now you know a little bit about Perfectly Clear, and why I use it, but how do I use it? Well the app is real simple to use, and whilst it does have the ability to take and then correct photos, like many apps that interface with the iPhones default camera app, I never use this feature, I only use the app to load and correct photos from the camera roll. If you are unfamiliar with Perfectly Clear, then correction is done simply by launching the app, tapping "Open Photo", loading a photo from the camera roll/photo album, and then waiting while the app does all the cleaver stuff. When it has analysed the image, the app will present the results in a split screen, showing you the before and after. Now for me, 99% of the time, the results are spot on, so I just have to hit save and I'm done; but for that 1%, the app allows you to manually tweak the exposure, contrast, colour vibrancy, sharpness and tint, by tapping and opening the tray found on the right of the preview screen. For an extra fee, you can also unlock the apps noise reduction tool, and whilst I have paid and unlocked this feature, because I rarely shoot in low light conditions, I find myself almost never using the "Noise Removal" tool.

Well, I hope you enjoyed my first first app, up close and personal, and if you want to read more about the apps I use and how I use them, then look out for more from this new series over the coming weeks/months.

If you are interested in finding out more about Perfectly Clear and the technology behind it, then head over to the Athentech Imaging website, or if you want to buy the app, then it is available from the App Store, priced at £1.99/$2.99/€2.39.

Please note: All images in this post have been taken with and edited on an iPhone 4

My iPhone photos are all Perfectly Clear again

If you've been shooting photos with your iPhone as long as I have, then you will probably own (if not heard of) Perfectly Clear from Athentech Imaging.

In the early days of iPhoneography, Perfectly Clear was everyones (including mine) go to app for improving the cameras poorly exposed images, with just 1 click. Then about 18 months ago, disaster struck, as due to developer issues, a seriously buggy version 2.0 of Perfectly Clear hit the App Store, and this once 5 star app rapidly fell to a 1/2 star app.

Well, it may have taken 18 months, but yesterday version 2.4 of Perfectly Clear for the iPhone hit the App Store, and the King of the "Automatic Photo Correction" apps is back, and here is what is new, improved and FIXED :)

  • Fixed crashing bug from previous version
  • Memory optimization to prevent running low on memory
  • Optimized preview for faster loading
  • Optimized correction speed by over 100%
  • Updated save size to accommodate 8MP camera (4S)
  • Optimized file size for faster workflow
  • Made Tint correction more responsive
  • Captures and preserves EXIF data when taking photo through Perfectly Clear
  • Captures and preserves location data when taking photo through Perfectly Clear
  • Preserves EXIF data when importing image
  • Preserves location data when importing image
  • Identifies Perfectly Clear corrected image in EXIF data
  • Fixed image orientation data
  • Improved share abilities with Facebook
  • Improved share abilities with Twitter
  • Improved share abilities with email
  • Increased response from correction sliders
  • Fixed unusual behaviour of slide-out panel

If you already own Perfectly Clear for the iPhone or iPad, then you can download version 2.4/1.4 for FREE, but if you've never heard of/seen/tried this app before, then until Friday both apps are on sale for £0.69/$0.99/€0.79/£1.49/$1.99/€1.59, and I can honestly say, having played with the iPhone version, whether you have an iPhone 4 or 4S, "Perfectly Clear is once again a must have app."

Above: Taken with my iPhone 4. Before and after Perfectly Clear.

A word about Perfectly Clear for the iPad: Disappointedly, version 1.4 will not save above 8 megapixels, so if you edit your digital compact/DSLR photos on your iPad and hoped to be able to add Perfectly Clear for the iPad to your workflow, then you will be sadly disappointed. I have raised this issue with Athentech Imaging, and I have my fingers crossed in hope that they will address this, but until then I can not recommend the iPad version for anything other than lower resolution photos :(
