Popsicolor gets an update, and…

..we've got promo codes to give away.

Yes, that's right, Popsicolor from John Balestrieri just got an update, and to celebrate this release John has given the iPhoneography blog 10 promo codes to give away, so if you fancy one, then read on.

This update of Popsicolor includes the following fixes and improvements, with the most notable being the speed increase, which was significant on my iPhone 4.

  • SPEED: About 2x faster! See our data: bit.ly/pop_101
  • Fixed: Crash with large images
  • Improved edge quality (less 'jaggies')
  • Removed accidental flag for German localization

Promo code giveaway: I recently described Popsicolor as "simple, easy to use, and the perfect companion for your Poster or T-Shirt projects", so with that in mind, and for the chance of winning one of these promo codes, what would you use Popsicolor for? My favourite 10 answers to this question received over the next 24hrs will each receive one of these promo codes, so good luck and have fun ;-)

For those who can't wait, or don't want to enter the contest, then Popsicolor is available from the App Store, priced at just £0.69/$0.99/€0.79

The wait is over. Popsicolor is now available in the App Store

You've seen the video, you've read the review, now you can get the app, as Popsicolor is now available in the App Store, priced at just £0.69/$0.99/€0.79.

For those who don't know what Popsicolor is, or what it does, here is the developers description.

"Popsicolor creates a watercolor painting effect from users’ photographs utilizing one or two colors. The colors are blended into a gradient from the top to the bottom of the image. Users can pick their own colors from Popsicolor’s palette or let Popsicolor pick colors—for surprising results.

Popsicolor creates authentic-looking watercolor images by simplifying the tones and shapes of each image just as a watercolor artist might: The image is made up of separate “puddles of color” which show intensity changes near the edges where drying is simulated. Some areas of the image are kept protected and unpainted with a simulated “frisket mask” that creates pure white details inside of highly colored areas.

During the simulated painting process, Popsicolor leaves realistic drips and streaks, but the user can prevent these from forming by keeping their iPhone or iPad level while the image is created.

Users can export their paintings at a variety of sizes and Popsicolor also supports the saving of “full resolution” images."

Popsicolor, a quick pre-release review

On Monday I revealed a new (yet to be released) app from the developer of Percolator called Popsicolor. Well John Balestrieri (the developer) very kindly sent me a pre-release copy, and whilst in London this past week (see sample images) I had the chance to play around and experiment with the app, and here is my mini review and thoughts.

About the App: The app is very simple and easy to use, with minimal, yet great functionally. Launch the app and you are presented with a blank canvas and a wood grained task bar. Tapping the camera icon allows to to take, load or paste a photo. Having selected your source, the app begins to do its magic. First it begins "Unwrapping…", then it starts "Making a Mess…", before "Cleaning Up…". When complete, the app presents a randomly generated water/poster paint screen print type image, that can be saved "as is" by tapping the little heart icon, or if you want to be more creative, you can mix the various top and bottom colours by tapping on the colour of choice, the print coverage from minimal to natural to bold by tapping the brush icon and selecting "Focus…" and the final output size from 1024 pixels to full resolution. And if you're feeling lazy, you could just let the app "Remix" the "Flavors", and that's about all there is to Popsicolor.

My Final Thoughts: Simple and easy to use, this app, with the right photos, could potentially make some great graphical images for t-shirt or poster projects, or to use in conjunction with other apps, and when released (which it should be any day soon) at just £0.69/$0.99/€0.79, will be a must have app for many iPhone/iPad users.
