iPhone App Review: DXP (Double Exposure) by Sweet Cheeks Willie™

DXP by Tandem Systems Inc. is from the same developer of MonoTaste with Toy Lens, ColorTaste with Toy Lens, StripCam & DXP FREE. DXP stands for Double Exposure, meaning more than one combined photo made into a final image.

The AppThe above photo was created with DXP
Just like its sister apps the DXP interface is very much the same. It is easy to use & navigate around. Once you launch the app you are presented with the splash screen & 7 icons at the bottom. 4 of which are highlighted. Camera: take a photo within the app, Insert photo from camera roll & photo albums, Settings: which features the composite effects etc, & the Info button (includes a how to as well). The remaining 3 buttons are visible once your first image is loaded. These functions include: Masking, Rotate, Mirror right to left, Mirror top & bottom and B&W. As well as Save image & remove or discard images.

When you first open DXP & view the settings > composite effects you will notice by default there are: Halfmix, Multiply, Screen, Overlay, Softlight, Hardlight, Difference & No Effect. Which many will be familiar with if you have used any computer photo editors such as PhotoShop etc. But if you exit the app & visit your iPhones main settings & navigate down to the apps > DXP then you will see the option to turn ON Extended Effects within DXP. These additional Composite Effects now include: Color, Luminosity, Exclusion, Saturation, Hue, Darken, Lighten, Colordodge, Colorburn, Plusdarker & Pluslighter. 18 available effects in addition to the Masking etc.

DXP ImpressionsThe above photos were created with DXP
DXP is one of my all time favorite iPhone photography apps. I use it almost daily & would say it is used in one way or another in almost everything I create. DXP brings out the fun & creative side in my work. Everyday is another fun filled experiment using DXP just as others would use PhotoShop etc. It has been a main stay on my iPhone since I first purchased it last year.

DXP is simple & easy to use & also complex. So almost anyone can use it & get amazing results without knowing very much at all. As well it is complex enough that anyone who knows very much about photo editing, filters, textures, masking etc can really enjoy themselves. Within minutes of experimenting with different effects you can create some eye popping photos. I highly recommend playing around with each effects function & seeing which will give you the best results. There are about 6 effects I use on a regular rotating basis, in combination to make some very interesting photos.

DXP Pros:

  • In my opinion DXP is one of best & most exciting & creative iPhone photography apps. With functions for applying effects, textures, filters & post processing all in one app.
  • Saved photo sizing is a reasonable 606 x 808 size (but if I recall correctly this will be improved upon soon to even larger sizing).
  • 18 amazing effect modes as well as, Masking options, Rotation, Mirroring option for Right or left & Top & bottom. Also a option to convert a photo & or your final result to B&W within the app.
  • Reasonably priced at $1.99 you certainly get a lot of bang for your buck. I would refer to DXP as a photographers tool & an editing app, while you certainly will get your moneys worth of entertainment as well.
  • Unlike any other quality iPhone photography app. DXP is not a gimmicky app it is a quality editing & image blending tool.

DXP Cons:

  • Considering the amount of work this app is doing to create your results some might think it will be a bit slow. (but to me this is not a downfall at all for DXP truly is doing lots of creative blending behind the scenes) Thus giving you quality results.
  • Saved photo sizing is a reasonable 606 x 808 size (but if I recall correctly this will be improved upon soon to even larger sizing). I added this to Pros & Cons for normally I would be complaining but don't worry improved, larger saved image sizing is coming soon.

Conclusion
I honestly have nothing to complain about DXP. It has helped me be as creative as possible. DXP gives you the opportunity to express your creative side all within the concept of the iPhone. DXP is developed by one of the kindest & giving iPhone developers around. As a beta tester I have had the opportunity to have beta tested DXP FREE & then DXP from the very first release. And I am very thankful for what DXP has allowed me to accomplish all from within a handheld mobile device called an iPhone. As a result I can easily give DXP ✭✭✭✭✭

I highly recommend DXP to anyone interested in photo editing, blending, manipulation. Or if you are just looking for a fun photo app. DXP provides amazing image tools right at your fingertips. I'd be lost without it!

For anyone interested there is a DXP masking image set available for download from the developer. It includes 15 masks in both Landscape & Portrait sizes.

The iPhoneography Showcase of Sweet Cheeks Willie™ (Patrick)

My name is Patrick aka Sweet Cheeks Willie. I have previously worked in music management for years & have always been into computers & electronics. Modifying, repairing, building as well as beta testing desktop apps etc. Now an entrepreneur I have always been interested in photography & photo editing but had never really done much other than messing around. I'd never used PhotoShop (Okay 10 mins in my lifetime so that doesn't really count) & as of September 2008 when I bought my first iPhone 3G I became addicted to photography & photo editing, manipulations & anything semi related. Now I am a self proclaimed iPhoneographer, taking & editing photos all the time. It is an addiction, a passion & I truly enjoy it... I think I have pushed the limits & boundaries further every time I create something new. I never thought I was good but I have started to love my own work more & more as I progress. A large portion of my work is portrait & self portraits, edits & manipulations. But I enjoy all aspects of photography. Multiple/Double exposure, filters & texture work are my favorites. But I enjoy the art of photography & all the doors it opens to ones own creativity.

Additionally I'm a Beta Tester of a large majority of the iPhones photography apps, games & social networking apps etc and, many Mac desktop apps too.

I am always willing to try new things & if you are a app developer & interested in having me Beta Test your apps please contact me anytime: http://www.flickr.com/people/thescw/
